Ok, so I am a little slow with the current fads but I have recently been scoping out ebay. I have gotten about 3 or 4 things from there lately and have made some discoveries but would like some of you experts to give me some more insight.

First I noticed that some of these goobers charge humongous shipping costs so thay can gouge you right out of the good deal you think you just got. I bought a small chrome peice for my bike, cost about 5 bucks, weighed about 4 ounces and the shipping cost was $5. I know the postage was probably $1.65 because that is what was on the shipping dohicky the post office prints for a stamp.

Second, most people set the starting bid so high it never gets a bid I suppose hoping to get lucky and have some chump actually bid on it.

Third, to my astonishment I was looking for bike parts and found a place local with a bunch of stuff listed. Come to find out they do not have the stuff they auction, they wait until you win it, then order it. A cyber middleman if you will. Needless to say, you have to wait for it to come in to them, then for them to ship it for you.

Fourth, some of these goobers go to Goodwill or similar places and fill a bag with crap then try to auction it off. Boy's remote control is messed up so I looked for a new one and it was $40. Just for goofs, I typed in the model number on ebay and WALA there was one in Seatle for $5. I got it, paid the $5 shipping (actually cost the guy $1.90) only to get it and it was trash and worked worse than the one I had. He refunded my money but it was evident he picked it up from some trash bin.

I know there are typical scams and gimmicks so my question to you professional ebay addicts is; What are they so I don't fall victim.

ALWAYS check the feedback of the person you are buying from. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

I also saw an auction in which the bid increments were $100. The last bid was for $10,701 and the seller lowered the reserve to $10,801 and the little window thing said "Next bid meets reserve" enticing the dude to bid again. the seller was trying to eek out an extra $100.

Ebay. it can be awesome or it can be terrible, always check there feedback, i've been an ebayer for 6 yrs and out of 200+ purchases have only been stung once.

If you feel you have been jerked around, you can always email ebay, leave negative feedback. Most of the goods ones are also verfied through paypal (how you get them money and how they send it)

Hey goofy....on high dollar items Ebay does the bid increments at $100 not the seller...a seller can NOT lower the reserve after an auction starts...the reserve is done at the time the ad is placed...can NOT be changed...

From ebay help page on reserve prices.

Why revise your price?

Revising your price may increase your chances of selling your item. Certain eBay Motors categories provide additional flexibility to allow you to change your prices, even after your listing has received bids.
About revising your reserve price listing

You can:
Lower your reserve or Buy It Now price
Add a Buy It Now price
Remove the reserve price

Part of the reason for high shipping is that ebay fees do not come out of the shipping costs.

I saw something on there for $1 but $300 shipping, I had a half a mind to big $1 and tell the guy I would come pick it up LOL

Pete, "FleaBay" is like anything thing else when buying mostly used items.... Buyer Beware!

I have picked up a few good items and have been disappointed with an item as well. To a real scammer "bad feedback" is meaningless.

Most of the sellers are very good, though. I beleive the higher "shipping " prices also cover the packaging (bubble wrap), shipping envelopes or boxes and postage.

Pete,

I haven't purchased anything off eBay in about 2 years, but for several months I was heavily addicted to it. I would search day & night looking for deals and found many. My best deal ever was a full-size bottle of DKNY lotion that I paid $4.50 for total. I've also purchased many Harley Davidson t-shirts from other states; some were overpriced, but I was buying them 'cause I knew nobody in the area would have the same. :yay:

Always check the feedback of a seller, and if you still have doubts, send them an email. I've had many back-and-fourth conversations with sellers over items as low as $20 just because I wanted to have more confidence when bidding.

Not everyone is out to scam you, but it can happen; you just have to be careful about who you deal with. And unfortunately, they won't have a sign on their forehead. :ohwell:
