Genesis 36:1This is the account of the family line of Esau (that is, Edom).
2 Esau took his wives from the women of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite— 3 also Basemath daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.
4 Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, Basemath bore Reuel, 5 and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were the sons of Esau, who were born to him in Canaan.
6 Esau took his wives and sons and daughters and all the members of his household, as well as his livestock and all his other animals and all the goods he had acquired in Canaan, and moved to a land some distance from his brother Jacob. 7 Their possessions were too great for them to remain together; the land where they were staying could not support them both because of their livestock. 8 So Esau (that is, Edom) settled in the hill country of Seir.
9 This is the account of the family line of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir.
10 These are the names of Esau’s sons:
Eliphaz, the son of Esau’s wife Adah, and Reuel, the son of Esau’s wife Basemath.
11 The sons of Eliphaz:
Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam and Kenaz.
12 Esau’s son Eliphaz also had a concubine named Timna, who bore him Amalek. These were grandsons of Esau’s wife Adah.
13 The sons of Reuel:
Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were grandsons of Esau’s wife Basemath.
14 The sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon, whom she bore to Esau:
Jeush, Jalam and Korah.
15 These were the chiefs among Esau’s descendants:
The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau:
Chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, 16 Korah, Gatam and Amalek. These were the chiefs descended from Eliphaz in Edom; they were grandsons of Adah.
17 The sons of Esau’s son Reuel:
Chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the chiefs descended from Reuel in Edom; they were grandsons of Esau’s wife Basemath.
18 The sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah:
Chiefs Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were the chiefs descended from Esau’s wife Oholibamah daughter of Anah.
19 These were the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these were their chiefs.
20 These were the sons of Seir the Horite, who were living in the region:
Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These sons of Seir in Edom were Horite chiefs.
22 The sons of Lotan:
Hori and Homam. Timna was Lotan’s sister.
23 The sons of Shobal:
Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam.
24 The sons of Zibeon:
Aiah and Anah. This is the Anah who discovered the hot springs in the desert while he was grazing the donkeys of his father Zibeon.
25 The children of Anah:
Dishon and Oholibamah daughter of Anah.
26 The sons of Dishon:
Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran and Keran.
27 The sons of Ezer:
Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan.
28 The sons of Dishan:
Uz and Aran.
29 These were the Horite chiefs:
Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 30 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs, according to their divisions, in the land of Seir.
Flip the page Pastor, this is nothing but gibberish. These are names we haven't studied. These are not in the bloodline. There is no interest here... flip the page Pastor... let's get on with the story of Jacob [Israel]. Ah, contrare, these are the people who were blood relatives of Jesus too. These are the cousins who heard all the stories about how Jacob stole Esau's Birthright and Blessing. These are the cousins who heard Esau swore to kill Jacob. There are a lot of names here I have never heard before. Here's the link to the commentary.
Their possessions were too great for them to dwell together: Esau’s painful cry to Isaac Have you only one blessing, my father? (Genesis 27:38) proved unfounded. God blessed Esau because he was a descendant of Abraham, and God blessed him in the only way he really cared about — materially.
So Esau dwelt in Mount Seir: This was land to the south and east of the Dead Sea, and became known as the land of Edom.
Esau the father of the Edomites: Edom and the Edomites are mentioned some 130 times in the Bible. They were an important group of neighbors to Israel.
The Edomites in Mount Seir: The Edomites also held the rock city of Petra, or at least its early version. This city can only be reached through a narrow, winding gorge. Petra was so defensible that it was said that a dozen men could protect Petra against a whole army.
She bore Amalek to Eliphaz: Notable among this list is Amalek. From him came the Amalekites, notable enemies of Israel (Exodus 17:8-16; Deuteronomy 25:17-19; 1 Samuel 15:1-8).
The commentary doesn't say anything about Anah who found the hot springs. The author of these verses thought it was so significant, they included it in these verses. It sticks out like a sore thumb at verse 24. So, I googled it. I was led to "The Torah". [The Torah.com] There was something in there that said that Anah also bred the first mules. That's where I learned that those Horite Chiefs in verse 29 were NOT sons of Esau. The Horite Chiefs were the original inhabitants of the area where Esau moved his livestock too. In verse 6 Esau moved to Seir where he moved into the area run by the Horites.
On top of that... I learned the sons of Esau had "Kings". The Horites had "Kings" and the Edomites just had to have some "Kings" as well. After all, that's how it goes right? The sons of Jacob will be jealous of the "Kings" and plead with God to give them a "King" too. {King Saul and then King David and then on and on]
Maybe the author put verse 24 in there so that we would be thinking of stubborn mules when we read about Esau's [Edom's] family.
At any rate, Esau and Jacob had too much. Their flocks were starting to bump into one another. Esau moved to Southern Jordan.
"Got Questions" says "Edom was an ancient kingdom that is mainly associated with Esau and his descendants in the Bible. Being descendants of Abraham, the Edomites were related to the Israelites. But they did not always act as brothers."
All this gibberish explains a lot. The Edomites moved to get away from the Israelites and got too close to the Horites.
The first mule was probably bred by the Edomites.
Edomites, Horites, and Israelites... Oh My!
