How much do the batteries weigh?

MONTREAL, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Air Canada (AC.TO) on Thursday said it would buy electric planes for the first time with the acquisition of 30 battery-powered regional aircraft from Heart Aerospace, as more airlines turn to new technologies to lower emissions and fuel costs.

A 100Ah lead acid battery weighs between 30kg and 32kg. If your 100Ah lead acid battery weighs less than 30kg, it is not a 100Ah battery - you've been ripped off. A 100Ah lithium battery weighs 16kg. They don't make light-weight lead or light-weight lithium.
Lithium batteries weigh far less than a common lead acid battery, and the weight is allowing better power/weight ratios.

They are showing a photo of regular size airliners but these are smaller planes.

Not a bad idea; wider, more comfortable seat with additional leg-room, as well as exercise so one doesn't get all locked-up physically. But where's the dining tray for my peanuts?
No peanuts. Heaven forbid one person has an allergy. Ketchup packets now.

You think a 45min to an hour layover charging your Tesla is bad? :killingme

Usual chargin sessions for a Tesla are 20-30 minutes, but anyway.

What is the charge time?

Charge time is largely dependent on the available charging infrastructure but with the recommended charging, we can charge an ES-19 in less than 40 minutes for an average mission.

What are the power requirements per charger?

We recommend an optimal charging power of 1MW per aircraft, to achieve the customer desired turnaround time.

Charging can be accomplished by mobile chargers that connect directly to the grid power, fixed charger installations at specific gates, or even mobile storage units that may be charged remotely. It very much depends on the specific airport and flight operation frequency.

If electric vehicles get a max 400 miles per charge. How many stops to charge would these planes need .? Maybe have in flight charges. :sshrug:

Dont need batteries. They will just keep them plugged in with really long extension cords.

So, each of these uses enough electricity to power a small town?

If they insist on zero emission birds with props and probabbly couldn't do 200 kts this would be much cheaper.

Well, with a flight range of 250 miles, and a recharge time of 40 minutes to regain 200 miles of range, no extra stops needed. Lots of regional flights in the 200-250mile range. Heres the places within 250 of DC.

So, each of these uses enough electricity to power a small town?

I'm no electrical genius, so anyone please correct if I'm wrong. a MW is a measure of capacity, not use. Like saying my house has 200amp service, that doesn't tell you how much electricity I use. And of course small is a variable, as is how much a small town might use. A small town in Minnesota will use a far different amount than a small town in Appalachia in September.

But if you take how much fuel an aircraft carrying the same amount of people say a Beechcraft 1900 (3.56lbs a mile) or a Dornier 228 (3.3lbs a mile) at 6.75lbs a gallon, the middle of allowed weight for Jet A1, you end up burning about about 132 gallons. for a 250 mile trip.

Thats gonna burn a lot of coal.

And that of course, depends on where you charge it. Indiana, yep, almost all coal generation. Most places, coal make up a far lesser percentage.
