Electrician Question

Back in February purchased a portable generator, (5000, 6250max) I know I cant get a whole lot of things hooked to this size generator, I just want some of the essentail things hooked up to it to survive a power outage. I am now ready to have it hooked up the right way with a 10 circuit transfer box installed below my main breaker box.
I just recently finished a attached garage addition to my house and got a estimate from the the electrician who the contractor used to wire the garage, Im thinking it is kind of high and I want to get some other estimates.
The main circuit box is in a corner of the family room, to add the other box he would have to go through paneling and drywall to put the box below it, and then would have to drill through brick and block, to put the plug outside to plug the generator in, this plug would be just outside of a garage entry door. My plans if I ever needed the generator is to plug it in just outside the door and run the generator from just inside the garage (with the door open of course for ventilation).
He was going to purchase the transfer box and also purchase a new hanging light we saw in a catalog he had for outside over the front door and install these 2 items.
Without putting his estimate out here for all to see, any idea's from people in the know what this might run? :coffee:

Hey, know anyone that does drywall? :tap:

A little birdie says your Hubby does a excellent job.

The people who my contractor on the garage got did excellent work, I'll ask him who they are, think they are in the Mechcanicsville area.

There are alot of unknowns here. Can you list what he gave you an estimate on?? i.e. amount of circuits in garage, scope of work or some specifications. I'd have to look at it or know more. You don't have to list prices, just the entire scope.

...bashing paneling and drywall is usually free. Straitening it up afterwards should be a couple hours of patch work and a few bucks for materials.

He is supplying the panel, wire, breakers and transfer switch/breaker plus miscellaneous odds and ends.

If $1,200 is the number, and that's installed and parts, sounds like a good number to me. I'd guess a 1 day job, call that about $5-600 right there and I'd bet the parts are around $5-600. Hell, the breaker is probably $100-150 alone.

The price was $1,600, but also included purchasing and installing outside hanging light above front door.
I did go online and looked up the breaker box I had talked to him about and the one he suggested, and it was $350.00 and the plug for outside was $70.00, so parts could run as high as $600 or more with the miscellanous and the front light.
