Emergency Farrier Needed?

My horses back two feet are literally falling apart and he tore a front shoe off, taking part of his hoof with him. We have a show this weekend, which I'm probably going to be unable to attend due to the circumstances. Right now he's very sore and my normal farrier won't be able to come out until next Friday and that's just not good enough.

So, do you know of any farriers that would be able to come out within the next few days and take care of my boy? I'm not sure what can be done as far as his front hoof is concerned. There probably isn't enough hoof to put a shoe on even if I wanted. I'm looking for someone with experience and knowledge with QHs.

if he is sore i would wrap the foot with a diaper then duck tape then vet wrap all around the side (duck tape on bottom).. that way it will alleviate the bruising..

Shiela Montgomery is an equine podiatrist . she is very good and very accomodating. 410-924-1480
She came up to PG equestrian center to do emergency hoof care on a kids horse that chipped off a big hunk during HSS. she is very good!!!! The kid was able to ride her horse for the rest of the flat work during the rest of HSS.
She rode my boy for Advanced open trail.

Yes you are right she doesn't do shoes. but I was worried about the hunk of hoof that came off first. Might not be too good of an idea to put shoes on in that condition. SHeila does work with the farrier to solve the problem hand in hand. If it was a horse I cared about and sunk a lot of time and money into I would call her.

"NO HOOF NO HORSE"

Tim Hamilton is also good. LOOKING FOR NUMBER!

FOUND IT! His number is 301-904-0383.

ALSO, here is a link for MD farriers if you get desperate:

GOOD LUCK!! I hope everything turns out ok for you and your boy.

Yes I've known Sheila for a long, long time. I'm the one who got her to go to
HSS not this past year but the year before for the first time...
She can be hard to get a hold of with her kids back in school and her busy schedule. Thats is why I suggested the farrier I use that does shoe work. Believe me Track farrier see and work on some unbelievable feet everyday. She is in an emergency situation that need to be taken care of ASAP.

I have a QH show mare and love my new farrier way better then the last. His name is Spencer Bottoms. Pretty hectic schedule but you can try him 252-230-7512. Travels to FL to do horses in ocala and also to the hamptons in the summer. Really knows his stuff.

Who are you using now?

I agree, emergency situation that needs to be taken care of ASAP. That’s why I tried to give the OP as many options as possible. I am sure with our entire list of farrier POC's that the OP will find someone soon.

However, when Shelia came to HSS this past year, she came for an EMERGENCY and was there within a few hours of the call. She really cares about helping horses with serious hoof problems to try to get them to be sound again. It sounds like this horse may have notoriously bad feet and maybe Sheila could turn that around. Thank you all so much. I've called around and left messages and hopefully I'll hear back from someone today or tomorrow. I've used Tim Hamilton in the past, he gave my horse an abcess that put him out of work for 4 months so I don't want a repeat of that. I use Dennis Atkinson. He's been around for a long long time.

Yes, my horse has always had feet issues. He's just got those small, tiny little QH feet on a huge 1100lb body. Not a good mix, IMO.

Boy, I hear you! My mare has the same problem, 1100+lbs on tiny, tiny feet! Before the last show, I had the same problem, she did something in the field (?) and when I went to bring her in there was NO HOOF for regular farrier to nail a shoe to. I really like my farrier, but I thought she might have had another problem as well. So I asked if I could bring her along with my gelding to his appt. @ Woodside Equine in Ashland, VA. And I found out they have a farrier/vet day for difficult cases. They put my mare in special glue on shoes and she is doing great her hoof is growing nicely. We had recheck after a month this past Wed. and hopefully they will be able to put regular shoes on again soon. I only tell this long post because it seems close to your situation. The group of farriers that work with the vets on difficult cases meet at 2pm every 3rd Wed. of the month. Maybe Woodside 804-798-3281 could help you as well, one of the guys I really liked was Rod DeVries @804-929-2801. Good luck.

Woodside is more than great they are unbelievable. Last year my gelding had severe arthritis and I took him to woodside so after talking with Dr. we decided to fuse his hocks so there would be no more arthritis. Well they had a tight schedule the next day so the Dr stayed up til 11 that night doing his one hock and then finished the other one before I got there the next. They truely care about the animals and owners and will do anything to accomdate you. Some might say they are a little expensive but I don't see where they are with the quality they give and the procedures they do. They are specialist not little rinky dink vets. Woodside does do dentistry and yearly shots that are a good deal cheaper then my vet so I am thinking of driving over there for those.

SugarNspikes.. Just having your guy looked at would be helpful. You'd be surprised what they would find. Normally they find a few minor things in evaluation. Dr.Scott Anderson is the Owner and practices there. He's the one I've been using and I love him.
