Enchilada Sauce

UGH! Safeway didn't have my regular "Old El Paso" enchilada sauce (red, mild) so I reluctantly bought the Safeway brand because I didn't feel like going to another store.

:frown: Never going to buy it again. It's not horrible, but not like Old El Paso at all. I didn't like the taste of it right out of the can. I added some Rotel chilis/diced tomatoes and then some tomato paste/water to add some more flavor to it.

It didn't make my enchiladas inedible, but they're not like I usually make them. Live and learn. :ohwell:

Yeah, store brands are pretty much--phooey. I haven't tried either of these enchilada sauces, but lately I've been so adamant about trying to make things and trying get away from using the canned versions. And with enchilada sauce, it sounds like it would be fairly easy with ingredients already in the pantry. But I also understand time and a busy schedule makes opening a can so convenient (especially if you know and like the taste).

I learned how to and made a shrimp cocktail sauce, and will never buy it in a jar again. Sooo good! :yum:

Homemade spaghetti sauce - I'm good. But definitely NOT on a workday!

Enchilada sauce - never tried making it and I think it would be hard to duplicate Old El Paso! I guess I could ask a few of my friends with a latin heritage. BUT I use fresh diced tomatoes (puree them into the sauce) when I can, or I'll use canned. I don't make my own flour tortillas either. It's just your basic all in one dish casserole for a busy mom - semi homemade!
