Epoxy?

So, when your car is 15 years old, things start to fall off. Like rearview mirrors off windshields. I'm assuming that I need some sort of epoxy to re-glue it to the window. I'm also assuming that any parts store should be able to direct me to the right stuff. Am I right?

The other question - will I be able to reglue it to the exact same spot? I had a mirror fall off a previous car, and I didn't do the job myself. I let somebody else do the work, and was forever annoyed afterwards because they glued it on a fresh spot of glass an inch to the side of the original location. Visibility was fine, but the visor bumped the mirror.

But I'm guessing that I can't reglue over the same spot of failed glue, so maybe I'll go an inch higher or lower, so the visors won't hit it.

Yes.

And I'd attempt to scrape what you can (razor blade) off the windshield, and glue it in the exact same spot

That sounds like a plan. I really would like to place it in its original spot, and the worst that'll happen is that I wind up moving it up an inch if this attempt fails. Although, I'm not really optimistic about being able to scrape off all the original gunk.

Thanks. :yay:

its easy enough to clean off the old "gunk" just use a single edge razor knife. Besure to remove the "mirror mount from the mirror and only glue the mount up. also pay close attention to the proper orientation for said mount.

There's a special glue to re-attach mirrors to the windscreen. Sold in the Automotive section. I've used it before, works great. If you follow the direction for cleaning the original spot, no problems.

Antique guy speaking here, yes you can do it,, agree with all the other posters, after mirror falls off. Take a single edge raxor blade and scrape all the old glue / stuff off. Wipe the area down with rubbing alcholoc and repeat the process again. In the old day's with places like Trak Auto, that went under. You can pick up a special adhesive that will glue it back on / have done it before, many times with older cars. I'm sure the newer auto parts stores have the same adhesive...

Appreciate all the advice. It was incredibly easy. Went to Autozone and looked for epoxy; right next to the epoxy was a kit specifically for reattaching a mirror. Only $6. Came with everything I needed, razor, sandpaper, epoxy, alcohol, and some dumbed-down instructions I could follow. Took 10 or 15 minutes to use.

And yes, the a razor scraped off the old gunk w/ no problem.
