Although there have been no mandatory evacuations, Leonardtown High School will open as a shelter for residents at 3:00 p.m. today. Residents should bring personal items and medicals to the shelter. Pets are not allowed in the shelter; however, animal wardens will assist in transporting pets to the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds for care.

Volunteer evacuations are recommended for the following areas:

St. Georges Island

Breton Beach

Cornfield Harbor

The following roadways are reporting major flooding (more than 6 inches) at this time:

Cornfield Harbor Road and Drive in Scotland have been closed.

The following roadways are reporting minor flooding (less than 6inches) at this time and have not been closed:

North and South Sandgates Road at Sandgates Inn and Seabreeze Restaurant

St George Island and Sheaffer Lane

Old Breton Beach Road from Farrall Lane

Rt 236 at Millwood Lane

Rt5 and 236

Thomas Rd

Piney Point Rd.

Rt 249

Labor Day Weekend Fireworks Display Postponed Until Sunday, September 3, 2006 Due to Inclement Weather

The Board of Commissioners for St. Mary’s County and the Department of Recreation, Parks and Community Services would like to inform the public that the Labor Day weekend fireworks display scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2006 has been postponed until Sunday, September 3rd due to inclement weather. The fireworks display will be held at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds and is scheduled to begin at dark (approximately 8:15 p.m.)

Admission for the fireworks display is free. The Fairground gates will open at 7:00 p.m. and vendors will be available selling food and beverages.

The wife just phoned in that 235 is closed between gate 2 and the Hermanville gas station.
There was a head-on collision there not too long ago.
