Esther 6:1 That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him. 2 It was found recorded there that Mordecai had exposed Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king’s officers who guarded the doorway, who had conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
3 “What honor and recognition has Mordecai received for this?” the king asked.
“Nothing has been done for him,” his attendants answered.
4 The king said, “Who is in the court?” Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the palace to speak to the king about impaling Mordecai on the pole he had set up for him.
5 His attendants answered, “Haman is standing in the court.”
“Bring him in,” the king ordered.
6 When Haman entered, the king asked him, “What should be done for the man the king delights to honor?”
Now Haman thought to himself, “Who is there that the king would rather honor than me?” 7 So he answered the king, “For the man the king delights to honor,8 have them bring a royal robe the king has worn and a horse the king has ridden, one with a royal crest placed on its head. 9 Then let the robe and horse be entrusted to one of the king’s most noble princes. Let them robe the man the king delights to honor, and lead him on the horse through the city streets, proclaiming before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!’”
10 “Go at once,” the king commanded Haman. “Get the robe and the horse and do just as you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything you have recommended.”
11 So Haman got the robe and the horse. He robed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city streets, proclaiming before him, “This is what is done for the man the king delights to honor!”
12 Afterward Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief, 13 and told Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him.
His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since Mordecai, before whom your downfall has started, is of Jewish origin, you cannot stand against him—you will surely come to ruin!” 14 While they were still talking with him, the king’s eunuchs arrived and hurried Haman away to the banquet Esther had prepared.
What a story..... can't you see it.... Haman must have been humiliated.....
In case this is the first view..... Let me catch myself up..... Mordecai is a man of Israeli descent. He has a niece, Esther, that he took in as a child when both her parents were killed. The king.... had a wife....named Vashti.... who refused his order to show off in front of his drunken friends when she was either 9 months pregnant or had just given birth.... so he divorced her..... and banished her from the Hamam. He got lonely so they made a big deal about looking for a new queen so Mordecai took Esther to the try outs. Now that lasted a long long time.... after all there were hundreds of women who wanted to be queen. Esther flourished with the year long beauty treatments and the king chose her. DURING that time.... there was a big headed guy named Haman.... so Haman thought his poop didn't stink.... everyone bowed to him..... except that Israeli, Mordecai. Now Haman was an Agagite.... an Amalikite..... they didn't get along with the Israelis at all..... so something had to be done. Big headed Haman went to the king and told the king that he wanted to destroy all the descendants of Jacob [who was renamed Israel by God] and they drew lots to see when that day would be. Thankfully it was almost a year away and Mordecai had time. Mordecai talked to Esther and convinced her to talk to the king. She told everyone to pray for three days... then she went in.... luckily the king was willing to see her.... [he killed people he didn't want to talk to.... apparently] she convinced the king to bring Haman to a dinner.... Haman got an even bigger head about himself.... and after his private dinner with the king and Esther... when Mordecai still would not bow to him.... that was the last straw.... Haman was on his way to get permission to put up a 30' pole with Mordecai's body stuck on it like a human popsicle... now this happens..... lol
This is from the easy English site.
We do not know why the king could not sleep. We do not know why he chose to read the books of official records. Maybe he thought that they were very dull. They would make him sleepy. But we know that this was part of God’s plan.
The kings of Persia were generous to loyal people. It is strange that the king had not rewarded Mordecai before. So now, the king wanted to reward Mordecai immediately. This too was part of God’s plan.
It was probably almost dawn. The king wanted advice about how he should reward Mordecai. He decided to ask the first important official that he could find. It was Haman. Haman got up early. At quite the right time, he came to see the king. He wanted the king to hang Mordecai. Then Haman could enjoy his meal with the king and queen. Perhaps Haman also did not sleep well.
The king did not ask Haman what he wanted. Instead, the king asked Haman for advice, but the king did not mention Mordecai’s name. Haman was proud. He thought that the king wanted to show him honour. It was usual for kings of Persia to ask people how they would like the king to show them honour. Haman did not choose riches. He was already very rich. He chose a reward that made him seem very important. He wanted to dress like the king himself and to ride the king’s own horse. This would happen in the main street of the city, where everybody could see him.
The king agreed with Haman’s advice. But he gave Haman a shock. The king said that he wanted to reward Mordecai. So the king ordered Haman to reward his enemy Mordecai, as Haman had wanted the king to reward him. Haman had to obey.
The king knew that Mordecai was a Jew. This must have made Haman uneasy. It also shows that Haman had lied to the king. He had said that the Jews were not a benefit to the king (Esther 3:8). It shows something else too. The king did not know which nation Haman wanted to destroy.
Mordecai must have been very surprised by what his enemy Haman did to him. Mordecai remained humble and he went back to his place at the king’s gate. Haman would have been very proud if the king had rewarded him in that way. Haman covered his head as he went home. He did this because he was so miserable. He told his wife and friends what had happened. The wise men were probably the same friends who had given him advice the day before. His wife and friends gave him very different advice this time. The day before they had advised him to kill Mordecai. But Haman had told them that Mordecai was a Jew. Now even Haman’s friends seemed to believe that God would protect his Jewish people.
The devil is in the details..... It seems the king of Persia didn't have time for details.... until they plagued him. I've had those nights when the details wouldn't let me go to sleep.... had one last night as a matter of fact.... hubby just got me a brand new sewing/embroidery machine.... and I was sewing all night.... so I know how the king felt.... I generally turn on a PBS documentary.... the king of Persian reads the chronicles of his own PBS life.... lol.
Haman was a big head.... I know his big old head was as red as a beet with clouds of smoke coming out his ears and a black cloud hovering over his head while he pranced that horse with his enemy atop wearing the kings robe through town..... I bet he was muttering a bunch of stuff under his breath.... and one of the things he would have muttered was "it should have been me".
Now... the King of Persia is going to dinner at Queen Esther's quarters with big headed Haman. Haman does not know that Queen Esther is Mordecai's adopted niece.... and the devil is in the details....
Poop is going to get stinky now....
