"BANGOR, Maine — A tearful ex-guardsman apologized to his family, former employer and the military before being sentenced Thursday to a year and a day in federal prison for forging orders so he could be paid by MBNA while working full time for the Maine Army National Guard.
U.S. District Judge John Woodcock ordered Dale E. Basher, 37, of Waterville to pay more than $97,000 in restitution to his former employer, now owned by Bank of America. The judge also sentenced him to five years of supervised release.
"My biggest regret is what this has done to my family and the shame I’ve brought on them," Basher said as his elderly parents sat behind him weeping. "My parents didn’t raise me like this. I’ve let them down the most."
Basher left MBNA in July 2002 to take a three-year assignment with the 11th Civil Support Team-Weapons of Mass Destruction unit based in Waterville. All members of the unit, including Basher, were on active duty. The group is a rapid-response team that trains and runs exercises for civilian first responders throughout the state.
The former sergeant, who served 15 years in the Guard, was dishonorably discharged after his actions came to light in October 2004."
