As an aspiring racing official, Mauricia Grant had grown used to working in a man’s world.

When she finally made it into NASCAR, Grant was appalled at the way she was treated beginning from her first day on the job until her firing last October.

Now she’s suing NASCAR for $225 million, alleging racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

“I loved it. It was a great, exciting, adrenaline-filled job where I worked with fast cars and the best drivers in the world,” Grant told The Associated Press. “But there was an ongoing daily pattern (of harassment). It was the nature of the people I worked with, the people who ran it, it trickled down from the top.

“It’s just the way things are in the garage.”

The 32-year-old Grant, who is black, worked as a technical inspector responsible for certifying cars in NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series from January 2005 until her termination. In the lawsuit, she alleged she was referred to as “Nappy Headed Mo” and “Queen Sheba,” by co-workers, was often told she worked on “colored people time,” and was frightened by one official who routinely made references to the Ku Klux Klan.

In addition, Grant said she was subjected to sexual advances from male co-workers, two of whom allegedly exposed themselves to her, and graphic and lewd jokes.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, lists 23 specific incidents of alleged sexual harassment and 34 specific incidents of alleged racial and gender discrimination beginning when she was hired in January 2005 thru her October 2007 firing.

NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said the organization had not yet reviewed the suit.

“As an equal opportunity employer, NASCAR is fully committed to the spirit and letter of affirmative action law,” Poston said, adding NASCAR has a zero tolerance policy for harassment.

In the lawsuit, Grant said she complained numerous times to her supervisors about how she was treated, to no avail. On one occasion, Grant said Nationwide Series director Joe Balash, her immediate supervisor, was dismissive of her complaints, explaining her co-workers were “former military guys” with a rough sense of humor. “You just have to deal with it,” she says Balash told her.

A product of the "I'm entitled" crowd. Jees, make it on your own merits lady.

Now these lawsuits will be coming out of the woodwork. "Oh, I'm offended!" Cripe, if I had a dime (rather than millions) every time I had to smack some dumb butt upside the head for being offended, I'd be rich.

If you cant stand the heat. Stay the hell out of the kitchen.

Women want to get involved with men's sports they need to learn to accept that men play hard.

Article doesnt say why she was fired. Probably because she did work on "colored people time".

I suspect the suit has more to do with her being fired and looking for that lawsuit entitlement that it does to any implied harrassment. I also suspect NASCAR will pay off the suit and kiss her azz and make appeasing stupid statements to prove their PC attitude.

Its stories like this that re-enforce the claim from our AM Brethren that 1960 type prejudice still exist. And even if half of which she claims is true those NASCAR officials are still ignorant bone heads and should be held accountable.

Only in the Democrat Party. The righties here on the RU say so, so it has to be true.

This is a great idea... give some crack ho $250 mil.... :sarcasm:

Seriously... Whatever judge gets this in front of him/her should throw it out of court and make the lady's lawyers pay the court cost. Suits are out of control in this country... I don't care if some ignorant red neck called her a "nappy headed ho" every day and told her she nice junk in her trunk everyday... To sue for 250 mil is a joke. Something needs to be done about the tort system in this country..

Why do people wait so long to sue people??

It's less than 9 months. That's not a long time in the world of civil litigation.

Apparently, she never made any complaints to NASCAR until after she was fired.

If there's any justice, here's how the case will go:

"Did you follow your employer's policies to report this harrasment?"

"No."

"Case dismissed."

She did complain.

If someone had said/did those things that she alleges to me while on the job Mr. Dummas's teeth would have met Ms. Tire Iron.

She says she complained, NASCAR says she never filed complaints. He said -she said.

If your company policy states that complaints must be filed with HR, you never complain to HR, but you go to your supervisor, did you follow company policy? If you haven't formally complained, do you think a court would consider your complaint valid?

A company has to be given a chance to react appropriately. It doesn't sound like she gave NASCAR that oppurtunity.

I don't doubt there were probably some inappropriate things said, but it sounds like she is only suing because she was fired.

If you faced harassment that was as bad as she's claiming, would you have stuck around for almost three years? Would you say you loved the job?

I see nowhere that it states these allegations were made PRIOR to her being fired. Am I missing something?
