Exodus 12:12 “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

The Israelites must eat the meal quickly. They must be ready to leave in a hurry. They must fasten their belts round their coats so that they could move easily. They must wear their shoes because they could not walk a long way with bare feet. And they must carry their sticks to help them to walk well. Also they used the sticks to control their animals.
They would be eating the meal at the time when the LORD ‘passed through’ Egypt. God would bring his judgement on ‘all Egypt’s false gods’. Already the LORD had punished some of those false gods. Those false gods included the River Nile (Exodus 7:19), Heqt, the false god with the frog’s head (Exodus 8:2), and Ra, the Sun god (Exodus 10:21). Now God would punish the Egyptians themselves. He would kill their oldest sons. But the Israelites had painted the blood on their houses. The blood was a sign. So the LORD would ‘pass over’ the Israelites’ houses. They would be safe.

While the Israelites were safe under the protection of the blood of the lamb, outside their houses a carnage of a magnitude, unknown before, went on. The angel of death killed all the first-born of man and animal. Nobody was exempt. It was God's judgment upon "all the gods of Egypt." They were the ones who had tried to keep Israel in bondage. Pharaoh had been little more than their puppet. Then as now, "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." The killing of all the first-born was ultimately the defeat of Satan. It is to him that God says: "I am the LORD."
The commentary at GodVine brings up a couple of questions. What if there were good Egyptians [gentiles] who had cared for the Israelites and who had adopted God over the little gods of pharaoh and the Egyptians. What happened to their first born?
Tomorrow is election day. Please pray for the safety of all those who are working at the polls and all those who are standing in the lines. Pray that we will be safe and that we will all vote our conscience.
Please pray that we will all honor our Veterans by exercising that responsibility.
My dad was a Vet. He was in the Navy as a field corpsman at the very end of WWII, during Korea, and he was in Medical Research during Vietnam. My dad use to say that Vets put their lives on the line for Democracy in order that we can speak and defend our opinion, and vote to keep it that way. I'm reminded of an election I saw on TV that took place in another country where the people had to dip their thumb in purple paint to vote. I'm reminded of an election I saw on TV that took place right here in this country, where people refused to be intimidated. I am reminded that it wasn't too long ago when only rich white men had the right to vote.
Please pray that God keeps us all safe. I'll be at precinct 0109, Maricopa County, Arizona all afternoon today setting up and all day tomorrow as Inspector. Please pray for me, and mine, and those who are in line.
