Well, I do remember studying this. I also remember thinking about the Egyptian Mummies and the Sarcophagus. It's nice when Bible Study comes together.
Here's what the Blueletterbible.org site says about verse 19.
In a great act of faith Joseph asked that his bones be taken from Egypt. He did this because he knew that Egypt was not their final resting place, but that God had a Promised Land for them.
God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you: Genesis 50:25-26 says specifically that Joseph was never buried. His coffin laid above ground for the four hundred or so years until it was taken back to Canaan. It was a silent witness all those years that Israel was going back to the Promised Land, just as God had said - now the promise was being fulfilled.

The GodVine Commentary says that the whole family might have been embalmed and brought back to Canaan.
It is supposed that the Israelites carried with them the bones or remains of all the twelve sons of Jacob, each tribe taking care of the bones of its own patriarch, while Moses took care of the bones of Joseph. St. Stephen expressly says, Acts 7:15, Acts 7:16, that not only Jacob, but the fathers were carried from Egypt into Sychem; and this, as Calmet remarks, was the only opportunity that seems to have presented itself for doing this: and certainly the reason that rendered it proper to remove the bones of Joseph to the promised land, had equal weight in reference to those of the other patriarchs.
It's nice to think back to that dysfunctional family of Jacob's and watch as Moses carries out last wishes for them.
