Exodus 16:21 Each morning everyone gathered as much as they needed, and when the sun grew hot, it melted away. 22 On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much—two omers(b) for each person—and the leaders of the community came and reported this to Moses. 23 He said to them, “This is what the Lord commanded: ‘Tomorrow is to be a day of sabbath rest, a holy sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil. Save whatever is left and keep it until morning.’”
24 So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. 25 “Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today. 26 Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.”

b. Exodus 16:22 That is, possibly about 6 pounds or about 2.8 kilograms
Two little things come to mind when I read these verses. I recall going to the drug store in Front Royal, Virginia. We had to pick up a prescription for someone in the family. There was rope all over the store. You could go to the druggist but that was it. Even the front cash register was closed. This was the only store in town that was open. It was Sunday.... it was a hangover from these verses in the Bible.
The other thing that comes to mind is those big Sunday dinners my grandmother use to make. They were completely from leftovers. Everyone would cook on Saturday and then re-heat them on Sunday. I can remember someone saying.... even women get to rest on Sunday.
I'm not crazy about maggots. They give me the heeby-geebies just typing the word. I'd have a little problem sleeping on Saturday night for fear that the maggots were invading my kitchen.
On top of that.... I can remember when you couldn't buy alcohol in some counties in Maryland on Sunday. Anyone else remember that?
I found these comments at GodVine.com.
This they did that they might have a provision for the Sabbath, for on that day no manna fell. What a convincing miracle was this! No manna fell on the Sabbath! Had it been a natural production it would have fallen on the Sabbath as at other times; and had there not been a supernatural influence to keep it sweet and pure, it would have been corrupted on the Sabbath as well as on other days. By this series of miracles God showed his own power, presence, and goodness, 1. In sending the manna on each of the six days; 2. In sending none on the seventh, or Sabbath; 3. In preserving it from putrefaction when laid up for the use of that day, though it infallibly corrupted if kept over night on any other day.
16:23 Here is a plain intimation of the observing a seventh day sabbath, not only before the giving of the law upon mount Sinai, but before the bringing of Israel out of Egypt and therefore from the beginning. If the sabbath had now been first instituted, how could Moses have understood what God said to him, Ex 16:4, concerning a double portion to be gathered on the sixth day, without making any express mention of the sabbath? And how could the people so readily take the hint, Ex 16:22, even to the surprize of the rulers, before Moses had declared that it was done with regard to the sabbath, if they had not had some knowledge of the sabbath before? The setting apart of one day in seven for holy work, and in order to that for holy rest, was a divine appointment ever since God created man upon the earth.
The easy English commentary talks about the Sabbath as well.
The word ‘Sabbath’ appears here in the Old Testament for the first time. When God created everything, he ‘rested’ from all his work on the 7th day (Genesis 2:2-3). While they were in Egypt as slaves, the Israelites had to work every day. The Egyptians gave them no opportunity to rest for a whole day.
Maybe if they brought back the Blue Law, which would require business to stop on Sunday, then the world would indeed be a better place. Maybe raising the minimum wage is a good thing.... but I'll bet bringing back the Blue Law would help the families more.
Even God needed a day off....
