Exodus 16:27 Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. 28 Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you[c] refuse to keep my commands and my instructions? 29 Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no one is to go out.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

c. Exodus 16:28 The Hebrew is plural

Sometimes I can almost hear God laughing at us. When the electric is out, why do we continue to flip the switch? When the water is off, why do we keep going to the sink? When you tell a child not to touch something, why do the insist on touching?

We use to tell Nannie, all the time, "Nannie sit down for a minute....", but she always had something to do. She even ate standing at the sink.

Now people are rushing to the store to get that Christmas present that they just know has to be there, even though it's been sold out since black Friday. It's not coming back.

These Israelites had been working on the Sabbath for their whole life. They never had a day off. Later they will create laws about the Sabbath that get way out of hand, making even resting into a legal chore.... but for now, God's just saying, take the day.

I've always thought the Sabbath was God's day off, that is until today. Now I realize that the Sabbath is for us. God doesn't need a day off. Some people only pray on the Sabbath when they go to church. If God was taking the day off, when our prayers wouldn't be heard until Monday. "Remember the Sabbath, and keep it Holy" was for our benefit. "Remember to treat yourself to a little rest."

Here's what the easy English site has to say.

But people did not obey Moses’ command. They went to look for*manna on the Sabbath, but they did not find any. On the day before the Sabbath, the LORD’s provision was enough for two days. And the manna did not go off. The Sabbath was a good gift from God. They rested on that day. Later, Jesus spoke about it. ‘God made the Sabbath for people’s benefit’, he said (Mark 2:27). The Sabbath was a special day that they should use for the LORD.

This comes from the Enduringword.com site.

This was the first time God spoke to Israel about the Sabbath. God essentially forced them to honor the Sabbath by not providing any bread from heaven on the Sabbath day

Put a pot roast in the slow cooker. Sit down, put your feet up. You have worked all week. Take a day off.
