Exodus 16 Manna

Exodus 16:Moses said to them, “It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat. 16 This is what the Lord has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer[a] for each person you have in your tent.’”

17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18 And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.

19 Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.”

20 However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.

a. Exodus 16:16 That is, possibly about 3 pounds or about 1.4 kilograms; also in verses 18, 32, 33 and 36

I found the commentary this morning at enduringword.com.

The bread from heaven was to be gathered on an individual or a family basis. God did not command the creation of a tribal manna gathering and distribution center. Every household had to provide for itself, and a rich family could not hire a poor family to do their work for them.

An omer could be as much as a gallon, especially in the later history of Israel. But at this early point in Israel’s history it may have meant only a cupful. It is an imprecise measure.

My Nannie would have worried herself to death over the Manna. She was a child of the great depression. She didn't let anything go to waste. When she made a pot of beans, those beans would keep showing up on the table until the last one was eaten. There was never a container in the back of the fridge that went bad.... because at every lunch and dinner, she would empty out the fridge, heating things up multiple times over multiple days until they were done. If God said take no more than you can use... Nannie would make sure that she had just the right amount because this wouldn't last in the fridge.
