" external component has thrown an exception

When l log on to my computer I get a message that says " external component has thrown an exception" I have virus software & spyware blocker and when I run the scan, it freezes up. I have run the spyware & malicious software scans and only came up with three items and deleted them. The computer is running very slow. I unplugged the printer, the mouse, the modem...and still get it.
Any suggestions as to what's going on here?

Try running all of your scans in safe mode....I'd start there.

Yeah that. Also reload your virus and spyware software. One of the first attacks can be to corrupt those programs. Make usre you have the latest versions of the programs and the virus/spyware definitions.
