Ezekiel 48:1 “These are the tribes, listed by name: At the northern frontier, Dan will have one portion; it will follow the Hethlon road to Lebo Hamath; Hazar Enan and the northern border of Damascus next to Hamath will be part of its border from the east side to the west side.
2 “Asher will have one portion; it will border the territory of Dan from east to west.
3 “Naphtali will have one portion; it will border the territory of Asher from east to west.
4 “Manasseh will have one portion; it will border the territory of Naphtali from east to west.
5 “Ephraim will have one portion; it will border the territory of Manasseh from east to west.
6 “Reuben will have one portion; it will border the territory of Ephraim from east to west.
7 “Judah will have one portion; it will border the territory of Reuben from east to west.
8 “Bordering the territory of Judah from east to west will be the portion you are to present as a special gift. It will be 25,000 cubits[a] wide, and its length from east to west will equal one of the tribal portions; the sanctuary will be in the center of it.
9 “The special portion you are to offer to the Lord will be 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits[b] wide. 10 This will be the sacred portion for the priests. It will be 25,000 cubits long on the north side, 10,000 cubits wide on the west side, 10,000 cubits wide on the east side and 25,000 cubits long on the south side. In the center of it will be the sanctuary of the Lord. 11 This will be for the consecrated priests, the Zadokites, who were faithful in serving me and did not go astray as the Levites did when the Israelites went astray. 12 It will be a special gift to them from the sacred portion of the land, a most holy portion, bordering the territory of the Levites.
13 “Alongside the territory of the priests, the Levites will have an allotment 25,000 cubits long and 10,000 cubits wide. Its total length will be 25,000 cubits and its width 10,000 cubits. 14 They must not sell or exchange any of it. This is the best of the land and must not pass into other hands, because it is holy to the Lord.
15 “The remaining area, 5,000 cubits[c] wide and 25,000 cubits long, will be for the common use of the city, for houses and for pastureland. The city will be in the center of it 16 and will have these measurements: the north side 4,500 cubits,[d] the south side 4,500 cubits, the east side 4,500 cubits, and the west side 4,500 cubits. 17 The pastureland for the city will be 250 cubits[e] on the north, 250 cubits on the south, 250 cubits on the east, and 250 cubits on the west. 18 What remains of the area, bordering on the sacred portion and running the length of it, will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city. 19 The workers from the city who farm it will come from all the tribes of Israel. 20 The entire portion will be a square, 25,000 cubits on each side. As a special gift you will set aside the sacred portion, along with the property of the city.
21 “What remains on both sides of the area formed by the sacred portion and the property of the city will belong to the prince. It will extend eastward from the 25,000 cubits of the sacred portion to the eastern border, and westward from the 25,000 cubits to the western border. Both these areas running the length of the tribal portions will belong to the prince, and the sacred portion with the temple sanctuary will be in the center of them. 22 So the property of the Levites and the property of the city will lie in the center of the area that belongs to the prince. The area belonging to the prince will lie between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin.
23 “As for the rest of the tribes: Benjamin will have one portion; it will extend from the east side to the west side.
24 “Simeon will have one portion; it will border the territory of Benjamin from east to west.
25 “Issachar will have one portion; it will border the territory of Simeon from east to west.
26 “Zebulun will have one portion; it will border the territory of Issachar from east to west.
27 “Gad will have one portion; it will border the territory of Zebulun from east to west.
28 “The southern boundary of Gad will run south from Tamar to the waters of Meribah Kadesh, then along the Wadi of Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.
29 “This is the land you are to allot as an inheritance to the tribes of Israel, and these will be their portions,” declares the Sovereign Lord.
30 “These will be the exits of the city: Beginning on the north side, which is 4,500 cubits long, 31 the gates of the city will be named after the tribes of Israel. The three gates on the north side will be the gate of Reuben, the gate of Judah and the gate of Levi.
32 “On the east side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Joseph, the gate of Benjamin and the gate of Dan.
33 “On the south side, which measures 4,500 cubits, will be three gates: the gate of Simeon, the gate of Issachar and the gate of Zebulun.
34 “On the west side, which is 4,500 cubits long, will be three gates: the gate of Gad, the gate of Asher and the gate of Naphtali.
35 “The distance all around will be 18,000 cubits.[f]
“And the name of the city from that time on will be:
the Lord is there.”
a. Ezekiel 48:8 That is, about 8 miles or about 13 kilometers; also in verses 9, 10, 13, 15, 20 and 21
b. Ezekiel 48:9 That is, about 3 1/3 miles or about 5.3 kilometers; also in verses 10, 13 and 18
c. Ezekiel 48:15 That is, about 1 2/3 miles or about 2.7 kilometers
d. Ezekiel 48:16 That is, about 1 1/2 miles or about 2.4 kilometers; also in verses 30, 32, 33 and 34
e. Ezekiel 48:17 That is, about 440 feet or about 135 meters
f. Ezekiel 48:35 That is, about 6 miles or about 9.5 kilometers
This tidbit is from Bible-studys.org.
All four sides when added together equal 18,000 cubits, which is nearly 6 miles around. Josephus, a Jewish historian, reported in the first century A.D. that Jerusalem was approximately 4 miles in perimeter.
The name: The city is called YHWH Shammah, “the Lord is There.” The departed glory of God, has returned, and His dwelling, the temple, is in the very center of the district given over to the Lord. With this final note, all of the unconditional promises which God had made to Israel in the Abrahamic Covenant, the Priestly Covenant, the Davidic Covenant and the New Covenant have been fulfilled. So this final verse provides the consummation of Israel’s history, the returned presence of God!
This is from the easy English site.
South of the holy area will be the 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometres) for the city. The city will be in a square of 1½miles (2.4 kilometres). This will be in the centre of this whole area. All round the city there will open ground 437½ feet (135 metres) wide. So, the city and its open ground make a square of 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometres). Beyond this square on each side, there will be land 3.3 miles (5.3 kilometres) by 1.7 miles (2.7 kilometres).
This land by the sides of the city area will be for farms. People from the *tribes will live in the city. Some of them will work here to provide food for the city.
The land on both sides of the holy area (this includes the city area) will belong to the prince. He is the leader, under Messiah, of the Israelites. He is from the family of David. And like David, he loves and serves the Lord with all his heart. His lands will be 8.3 miles (13.4 kilometres) from north to south.
Because of their cruelty, Jacob prophesied against Simeon and Levi. They did not receive shares in the time of Joshua. They lived among the other tribes. But in the future Simeon’s tribe will have a share. It will be equal to the shares of the other tribes. And Levi’s tribe will have their place in the holy area.
So all the tribes will be there. They will all have their proper place in the country. No tribe will have more land than another tribe. This may not be possible or practical by the present geography of Israel. But many things in this world will change when Jesus the Messiah returns. He will rule the world. And all his judgements will be fair and good.
For many centuries, the capital city of Israel has been Jerusalem. That name means ‘the city of peace’. But the city has not often been peaceful. There have been many wars there. Only Jesus the Messiah can bring about true peace that will last. And when he does, people from all the tribes will live together peacefully in the capital city. And that city will have a new name, because the *Lord will be present with his people.
So, Ezekiel ends his prophecy with the name of the city. Its name will be ‘the Lord is there.’ The whole city, not just the temple, has the Lord’s name. This shows that there will be a new relationship between the Lord and his people Israel.
I noticed.... the measurements of the land allotments would not fit in the area I know as Israel today. This new city.... it's going to appear after the descendants of Jacob [Israel] have a peace accord...... and since Jacob and Esau have been battling since they were in Rebekah's womb..... I would guess that the peace accord or agreement has to be between the descendants of Jacob and the descendants of Esau. Esau was born first..... Esau's family should have been the rulers of Canaan..... but Esau wasn't interested in city life.... and he was tempted by Jacob's delicious cooking..... so he sold his inheritance for a bowl of stew....... boy Jacob must have been one heck of a chef. Jacob also stole Esau's blessing.... when their father, Isaac, was dying..... Rebekah helped Jacob fool his dying father, Isaac, into thinking it was Esau [that hairy guy] at his bedside.... so when Isaac gave the "oldest son's blessing".... it was given to Jacob instead of Esau.
I guess after the earth reshaping quake that is going to occur..... the Temple will be replaced.... either by design or by divine intervention..... and everyone everywhere will know that the Temple is there and they will desire time in the Temple with God.....
My guess is..... this will be a utopia..... where people won't just warm a pew because that's what they have always done. People won't go to the temple to find out how to be rich...... People won't be lured by idols anymore..... the Temple.... will be the center of life..... it'll feel good to be there.... so much so... people will desire time with God.
That's why the city will be know as "the Lord is There"...... I imagine a child.... with her little hand stretched out.... finger pointed to a hill in the distance.... and she is saying "the Lord is There".
Once stupid humans figure out where God is.... and those stupid humans allow themselves to accept the Lord as their leader..... then there will be a true theocracy....... and everything will be reset.
