Failure of high school guidance counselors

With all the talk of student loan forgiveness I want to point out that I run I to a lot of people that went to these bullshit schools like ITT Tech not knowing any better, quite a few of them thought they were getting a useful engineering degree.

I think about my own situation, first family member to go to college, didn't know anything about what or which schools have ABET accreditation and think this could have been me.

I lay the blame on the uselessness of high school guidance counselors.

They've always been useless.

Somebody whos job consists of never having worked in the real world and then giving free education and career advice.

Unfortunately the military doesn't seem much better, also know quite a few that used their GI Bill on University of Phoenix to find out it's useless, the military won't hire then for the degree they paid for.

Not sure you can blame it on the guidance counselor's, I doubt they ever told someone to go to ITT or University of Phoenix.

Those schools are filled with traditional night schoolers (people looking to start a second career), dropouts (since they don't require a diploma/GED), and people who were probably told "college isn't for you" but liked the commercials.

They aren't all useless....the one I had in HS put a good amount of time in helping me thread my way through the complicated and very competitive process of trying to win a full-ride 4-year NROTC college scholarship.

Mines office was full of college and military pamphlets. They certainly wanted to know our plans after school, beyond telling us about the ACT or SAT and recommending we take a language they didn't provide much help. But you would think someone with an office full of college pamphlets and contact info would know a bit about options etc.

Also you would think that since high schools preach college college college they would be of some help to these students. It's a little easier now with internet but back in 92 when I graduated the high school guidance counselors were supposed to be where we went to get this info.

Like a lot of problems or challenges in life, the fault lies with the person making the decision. Due diligence. That's why it's key that your sample group consist of more than 1 person's advice or opinion.

Besides, those painful life lessons are the ones people never forget nor repeat.

These are kids though, with an adult I agree, but there is a certain trust that the public school guides them into their future.

It also isn't advice or opinion I am faulting, it is their failure to provide actual facts and information.
