Feminists in France are demanding that an iconic statue based on the famous VJ-day photo is torn down because it ‘portrays a sexual assault’. The sculpture is currently on display outside the Caen Memorial Museum near Pegasus Bridge in Normandy. However, the statue – which is 25ft tall and weighs 13 tonnes – has been criticised by French feminists who claim it shows ‘an assault’.

The ‘Unconditional Surrender’ sculpture –nicknamed The Kiss – shows a sailor kissing a woman while one arm is around her waist and another supports her neck. French feminist group Osez Le Feminisme has complained the statue represents a ‘sexual assault’ because the woman, Greta Zimmer Friedman, had the kiss ‘forced upon her’ by the sailor.

Because it is easy to find the true story. She didn't even know him and was shocked and not at all happy but, it was the era.

Huh?

George Mendonsa and Greta Zimmer Friedman — identified as the kissing couple by "The Kissing Sailor," a book published this year by the U.S. Naval Institute — called the moment an act of unbridled celebration.

"I can't think of anybody who considered that as an assault," said Friedman, who exchanges Christmas cards with Mendonsa every year and has appeared with him at several reunion events. "It was a happy event."

Since when does it matter what the actual participants (or in this case... the alleged "victim") thought about the subject? In today's PC crazy world, it only matters how it effects the ones with the loudest voices!

You are right, I forgot.

There was no shortage of sexual assaults and human trafficking during WW2, but that picture doesn't show one of them.

This is french feminists just being french feminists.

FEMINISTS CLAIM ICONIC WWII VICTORY KISS STATUE DEPICTS 'SEXUAL ASSAULT'

Friedman has publicly stated that she did not ask to be kissed, she was quoted as saying: “I wasn’t kissing him. He was kissing me”. However, she never made a complaint against the sailor, and in fact remained friends with him afterwards. The two met up on several occasions.

The name of the statue is a reference to the demand by Allied Forces that Axis Powers surrender without any conditions. This was achieved in 1945 after heavy casualties were inflicted on both sides. One of the bloodiest days of the conflict was 6th June 1944, nicknamed D-Day because it was when 156,000 British and American soldiers invaded France.

Whilst the laws on sexual assault can be difficult to navigate, in general terms consent does not nessesarily have to be verbally expressed. Instead if both parties are confortable with the situation then no offense has taken place, as a result it is unlikely a court would uphold the feminists claims about the original incident.

Oh for f*ck's sake.

:yay: Seriously.

We saw a life sized statue of this iconic event at the USS Missouri memorial in Pearl Harbor when we went in December. I have a lot of pictures of the statue and various members of our group posing with "them."

It showed the jubilance of the end of WWII. Spontaneous. The world had overcome evil. For this generation to not appreciate that is awful; especially, the French. We saved them. Who do they think they are? And, in the mean time they didn't let us use their airspace. They should be conquered. ISIS is not attacking the right people.

Ingrates. So many Americans died for them. I hope we don't attempt to save them again. Ever.

#1, I do not understand this statement.

#2, are you saying that Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Band were just a cult?

Stalin killed far more of his own people than Hitler did.
In Communism, assassination is how you get ahead.

Hitler's national socialism very much was a cult but, not 'just' a cult. It was a heck of a cult.
However, had he been assassinated, the whole thing grinds to a halt.

Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, they all depended on communism as their guiding light. Without any one of them, it's on to the next thug.
Nazi'ism was all about Hitler. Without him, Nazi'ism was nothing.
