Hi, I'm fairly new to town and I was just hoping I could get some farrier and vet recommendations! I live south of Leonardtown. I'm specifically looking for any leg/hoof specialists because I have a mare with a really bad clubbed foot and needs special attention. Thank you very much!

I use Dick Teachout - he is great - very educated and keeps up to date. My mare has crooked legs and crooked feet, and she has been totally sound since I switched to Dick as my farrier. Doesn't do shoes, though, he is natural hoof care. I will PM his contact info, not sure if he'd want it posted.

John Stott of Arundel Equine (301-812-0315) is an excellent vet. He's also a former farrier.

I use Pat Riffle for my farrier (301-769-3503). He is exceedingly dependable and knowledgeable, also a farrier school graduate.

A quick search on the forums will turn up many more vet/farrier recommendations.

Good Luck!

for easier stuff we use Tidewater Vet clinic in charlotte hall. for more difficult stuff we use Woodside Equine Clinic in Ashland, VA. Home.
Farriers: Dick Teachout (3019045037) is great if you want to do natural hoof care, no shoes. Tim Gray (4349606250) is quite meticulous about his work, he's been working on my horse's club foot.

When you find something/someone you like, go with it. This has been my experience. And most folks around here will tell you just load your horse up and haul it down to Woodside in Ashland. They will get your horse on a good plan and you'll know what you need to do.

Good luck!

I have a mare with a club foot and have been using Pat Quinn (Farrier) and Chris Runde with Tidewater Veterinary. Between them working together, they have done a wonderful job bringing her back around on two different occasions.

Her first bout included rotation, between x-rays and trims, they were able to bring her back. Her second bout, a couple of years later... included rotation and sinking of the coffin bone. Again x-rays and trims brought her back.

She has been stable now for almost a year and she gets trimmed more frequently than my other horses. Both bouts took place in the fall with no change to diet.

I also use Pat Quinn and have for the last 7 years.. I know some people have issues with him but I like him and he's always done me right and is punctual and proffessional.

Another vote for Dick Teachout. Great natural/barefoot farrier, also tries to educate the owner. Looks at the "big picture" in hoof issues, including diet and nutrient content, pasture setup in relation to activity level, etc.

For vets, Dr Stott is great. So is Dr Runde.
