Fox Has Cable's Oldest Audience

"An interesting tid bit from all of the ratings scramble for cable outlets: Fox News has the oldest cable audience, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"In a survey released by analyst Steve Sternberg, Fox News has the oldest audience among fully distributed cable networks. The network's average viewer last season was 65 years old, according to Nielsen. Heck, it's viewers are even older than viewers of Hallmark Channel, Military Channel and Golf Channel," writes James Hibberd. "Perhaps the reason viewers tend to leave Fox News on all day racking up hours of big Nielsen numbers is they can't actually change the channel?"

Welcome to Geezerville! snooze:

He adds: "The youngest fully distributed cable channel? Oxygen. Followed by Bravo and, weirdly, VH1 Classic, then Travel and TLC -- all averaging about 42 years old."

Add in Cartoon Network and you have a brief list of the saddest networks to have more viewers than MSNBC and CNN. :lmao:

:gossip: I hear Cartoon Network and Nickleodeon appealed too highly to their potential viewers and stole their ratings...

Methodically disorganized
In another finding just released...

Older people who regularly watch the news are more likely to be happy, wealthy and successful than kids who watch junk t.v. every day.
Hmm...

NOT Politically Correct!!
Nonuts is so predictable and falls right along party rhetoric, since the Race Card failed, lets attack the Fox News organization for continually calling out the WH buffoons... This was a hugh liberal failure last year, but lets do it again just in case... :dye:

He does try his best though, given his limited intellect and more limited arsenal of "attacks". As much as his kind fights for equality, I think it should be recognized upon him: he is equally as pathetic as the HuffPo, Daily Kooks, MSDNC, et al. :specialgoldmedal:

No PMSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, or CBS numbers because the sample size isn't statistically significant.

:roflmao: Even with the highest average age, Fox News has more than twice as many prime time viewers UNDER 55 than any other news network.

25-54 Prime Time
FNC – 588,000 viewers
CNN – 112,000 viewers
MSNBC –279,000 viewers
CNBC – 120,000 viewers
HLN – 159,000 viewers

The under 65 numbers further highlight the stupidity of MediaMatters and their joy in taking data out of context and only reporting the little snippets they like while ignoring the big picture:

35-64 Prime Time
FNC –1,114,000 viewers
CNN – 173,000 viewers
MSNBC –502,000 viewers
CNBC – 130,000 viewers
HLN –227,000 viewers

:killingme:killingme:killingme..ratings scramble..ratings scramble?? Fox has whupped the pants off the other networks, slapped them nekkid and hid their clothes. The headline could have just as easily been "80% of all living persons with cable access now watch Fox News; all other outlets fighting over the crumbs while MSNBC continues to keep its 12 loyal viewers"

Welcome to Geezerville! :snooze:

I find the results very difficult to believe. The average lifespan for men and women in this country is still in the low 70's. With any large sample, "average" and "median" usually come out very close. Since FOX usually wins the under 65 demographic, it would have to have a *HUGE* spike in the over 65 crowd.

This would be close to statistically impossible.

Of course, this is Media Matters, which is the left-wing equivalent of NewsMax. Not especially reputable. I'm suspicious of surveys done by a group whose stated goal is to combat conservative views in media.

I'd need to see that methodology because getting an average viewership in the mid-60's with as LARGE AN AUDIENCE as FOX regularly gets, they'd have to have every elderly person in America watching.

On the other hand....

So the hell what? Would you rather that FOX's average viewer be, say, 22? What would be a "good" age?

I don't have the raw age data, but this is interesting:

35-64 Prime Time
FNC –1,114,000 viewers

P2+ Prime Time
FNC – 2,461,000 viewers

P2+ is age two and up.

That means that 1,347,000 - or more than half - are either under 35 or over 64.

I doubt that there are many under 20 watching Fox News (willingly) so I can definitely see more than half of the Fox news audience being over 65. I don't know that there are enough to bring the average over 65 though.

"The Greatest Generation" is a term coined by journalist Tom Brokaw to describe the generation[1] who grew up in the United States during the deprivation of the Great Depression, and then went on to fight in World War II, as well as those whose productivity within the war's home front made a decisive material contribution to the war effort.

We're still talking big gaps here. For every 35 year old, you need three 75 year olds to *average* 65. For every 50 year old, you need two 72.5 year olds.

For every 18 year old, you need five 78 year olds.

65 is a *very* high average age, especially since the population begins to drop significantly as age progresses. You'd need all of them.

Basically, in order to **average** 65, you need a LOT of old folks, and to balance the span from 2-64 - in order to *AVERAGE* above 65, you need a HUGE elderly audience.

And the available viewership numbers simply do not support that. Mathematically, this is the biggest pile of crap I've ever seen these guys produce.

Hey Nonothing, Hawkings is calling for you to take the space craft with Dan Rather. If you ever had a college stats class, you only need like a 1000 people (actually less than that) to make projections.
