Kidnappings are up 300% in Haiti compared to the same time last year

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning American citizens to stay out of Haiti amid a surge in violence that included an American couple being kidnapped in Haiti last month.

"While we understand that there are strong ties between Haiti and South Florida, before traveling there one should consider the trauma and financial costs of being kidnapped not only to themselves but to their family and friends as well," FBI Supervisory Special Agent Liz Santamaria said this week, Miami Herald reported.

Lawlessness, torture, civil war and "The Purge" were all used to describe what the reality looks like for people living within the western borders on the island of Hispaniola.

I have no desire to go to Haiti or the Dominican Republic and that includes Chicago, New York and Philadelphia.

If I can't at least be as well armed as their criminals I will go elsewhere.

Maybe just me but, I never really considered Haiti or DR as desirable tropical vacation spots. When I think of the Caribbean, I normally think of The Bahamas, Bermuda, Turks & Caicos, Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, and the like.

As much money as the Clinton Foundation took in for them it should be a veritable paradise!

The wife and I enjoyed Grenada immensely when we visited that island for a week. We did stay at an all inclusive resort but we did go off resort twice, once for shopping and once for general sightseeing waterfalls etc.

Guadalupe is funny like that....some amazing resorts surrounded by nothing but abject poverty outside the gates.

Back when I was working on St. Thomas, I was in the "industrial marine" district. The crime and poverty was endemic...a big difference from what people visiting the resorts see.

That was one of my better visits in the 70s.

Nassau was another.

Jamaica is like that too.
If I was going to spend some time vacationing in that region, Roatan (Honduran island) would most definitely be my first choice. Flights to get there are cheap too. My son and I are seriously considering the idea of putting our Hatteras sportfishing boat down there for a while and do some charter work. My missus has other ideas for me though...

And here I am leaving for a music cruise that's going to Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Monsters of Rock Cruise.

There is a reason many of the popular resorts are all-inclusive: it’s not safe to step beyond the resort gates. Also, many of these places are visited by cruise ships at their private beach or island. If that’s the kind of travel people do, there is zero need for concern.

This danger has been present for years; it’s not new news.

I’ve only visited one all-inclusive - never again. My sense is that they are all middling at best, ergo, no need to visit these places at all.

Did you work on The Bomba Charger or The Bomba Cruiser?
My first and I spent a few weeks in the early 80's at Balongo Bay. The hop on Prin Air from PR was memorable...

No..never heard of those. I was there in the early-mid 90s, working on Russian-built hydrofoil ferry. Also did some service work on a couple Norwegian-built surface effect ship ferries.

They were the shuttle ferrys between St Thomas & St John. Tourist paid and locals rode for free.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic always baffle me. It’s the same damned island. One side is like the fourth or fifth most prosperous nation in the Western Hemisphere - and the other is one of the poorest in the entire world. And you can even SEE the difference along the border.
