Feds probe BMW motorcycles for fuel leak problem

Big Gummint at its finest.

The probe affects about 24,000 motorcycles from the 2005 through 2008 model years sold in the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the housing around the fuel pump can crack and leak gasoline. No fires or injuries have been reported, but the safety agency has received 28 complaints from owners of the bikes. At least two owners say that gas soaked their pant legs.

Investigators will check into how often the leaks happen and determine if a recall is necessary.

28 complaints out of 24,000 or .0012%.

Two who got gas on themselves or .0001

No fires. 0%

No injuries. 0%

I feel so much safer.

"The problem with BMW's design is that the composite quick disconnect expands during pressure cycling and imparts a radial load to the pump housing quick disconnect reinforcement flange. Over time, the pressure cycling causes the high pressure quick disconnect to impart sufficient radial load to the quick disconnect reinforcement flange to crack it."

Easy fix, replace with metal disconnects BEFORE it starts leaking/cracking. Maybe all of $8 for the disconnects (and if I remember correctly John Deere sells them)

For some reason fuel disconnects have been an issue on BMW bikes for a long while.. BMW usually says they aren't problems but the following years see them make changes that owners themselves have implemented.

My older bike had plastic disconnects and sure enough they started to crack and leak, replaced with metal disconnects like everyone else I knew that owned one.

Are you suggesting that the problem is not worthy of gummint involvement nor a mandatory recall of said scooters??? And how is it that you can just waltz into some supply place that has NOTHING to do with motorcycles and buy parts, cheap I might add, that have to do with preventing fires and injuries that haven't even happened? On your own???

I know it's amazing, and totally un-American..

Even a capitalist junkyard (Beemerboneyard) devised their own fix, a clamp that goes aound and reinforces the ring on the fuel pump housing.. preventing it from cracking, and no leaks..

Now I have to admit, in the event it DOES crack and it does start to leak it could be a $500 repair for a new fuel pump and housing, if you're not capable of McGyvering it yourself.
