Feeding the Deer....that I just hit.

Tuesday: driving up Brandywine road in pre dawn fog...a deer surges into the opposite lane, gets hammered and nails my lower grill before going under both wheels.
Big puff of fur, CSI blood splatter, and minor damage.
What do I find in the embedded fur & flesh under the van?
Corn...dried corn....it was even on my back bumper when I parked!

THERE IS NO STANDING OR CUT CORN FIELD anywhere near the hit.
So, the question is: who is the jerk who is baiting deer near a major 50mph road?...and where can I send the bill?

Is baiting Deer illegal in Md?
If so, what is the penalty...and who investigates?
I am not a happy commuter.

So someone out of spite put it on your vehicle to attract a deer for you to hit? Is that what you are saying? Man that is brilliant if it is true! Sorry for you...sorry for the deer...but it is funny.

Let me clarify:
I'm crusing at 50+mph, hit a deer that was just hit 1 second before by a car in the opposite lane...and I am flicking unchewed corn out of my undercarriage.
The deer was feeding VERY close to the road at someone's bait spot, got spooked, and charged across a crowded hwy...not especially funny.

Oh sorry now that I read the clarification...it really isn't funny. Thats dangerous. Why would someone do that so close to a road? Thats insane. Hope you find out something.

Baiting or feeding deer is legal, although the season is almost over. Deer travel a long way. I can't imagine that anyone would set up a feeding station right next to a major road. Maybe this was just one of those "benefits" of living in a rural area. I have killed three deer over the thirty years that I have lived in Southern Maryland. It isn't fun but it does happen.

Just a guess but perhaps the deer had eaten that corn long before he got close to the road - they don't always digest everything they eat right away. It stays in the gullet for consumption later...at least that's what I've been told.

Corn is one vegetable that doesn't get "processed" like other foods. In any event, it is a scary thing to hit a deer when you least expect it.

In My Opinion
the important thing here is that you were not hurt.

I could show pictures of a 55 ~ 60 mph hit that brought half the deer (neck and head) through the windshield and all the way to the back of the car, and the rest of the deer over the roof.
car was totalled just for the interior alone if you could imagine.

had that same deer come through the drivers side instead of the passengers side, I might not have taken pictures.

F-the car.
Be happy that you are here to complain about it.
Oh, and although they would not have helped you in this instance, those whistle things that people stick on the front of their car do seem to work to keep the deer off the bumpers. (yes I have one now)

Not according to all the research done. Deer hear the same frequency range that we do. If you can't hear tha little plastic thing while you're driving down the road, the deer can't either

I suppose the orignal poster is against hunting too.

I kinda doubt that; it just sounds like he is against baiting deer right next to a highway. (my apologies for speaking for Hessian if I got the wrong impression)

There is a lot of deer up through Brandywine... that's my technical mailing address... I saw a very nasty, bloody and mangeled deer this morning coming into work. Where exactly did you hit this deer?

Not against hunting...right bohman,

I enjoyed some awesome peppered venison over Christmas,..a gift from my Father-in-law. I look forward to hunting my land up in NY...but, I am not a cheerleader for those who bait or poach from roadside.

My brother warned me of "Wasting" disease from deer who begin habitually eating from a bait zone and also ingest some of their own feces which apparently sets off a version of "Mad Cow disease." I have not researched it so, that is all I know. John & Chern...I don't know how long corn stays intact in a deer but I do know: it was neither chewed nor dissolved. Some doe was just doing breakfast, and then made a bad decision.

Yes bcp, I am thankful it only did light damage: it could have proven deadly.
It happened so fast, I never even saw the deer. My initial thought was that I hit a ladder off of a contractors truck.

Dems...I am very sure it was mangled in seconds....just north of the RR bridge on the 381, 1/2 mile from Charles cnty border. How do I clean the bottom of my van??? Fur & flesh are hanging off!

Disco, you are correct, procedure would have had me raising my shields in the Deer asteroid zone.

I bet everyone who has lived in Southern Maryland for any length of time has taken out at least one deer... mine caused $1600 worth of damage.

Also, if your insurance agent hasn't seen your vehicle yet, don't remove the hair/meat/corn. I washed that junk off immediately and my agent wasn't happy. Luckily he found a small chunk of meat/hair that I missed.

:howdy: I've never hit a deer (knock wood) and I've been driving around here since the late 70's. I have however had one jump OVER my car. :lmao:

I had that happen in Beltsville (in the Ag farm), driving to a softball game. Deer jumped one fence, landed and jumped my car and the fence on the other side of the road....all in one motion.

Hessian, get one of those cheap rotating lawn sprinklers and set it under the car for an hour or so each night for a few nights. Short of lifting it and using a pressure washer, thats about the only way to clean the under carriage of a car.

The smell should go away in a couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear bout it. It makes a mess, aside from the shock of killing a deer and the PITA to get the car fixed.

As for the corn, deer don't drink and eat like humans do. If that deer was hit by another car first, more than likely what is all over your car is what was in her stomach when her belly ruptured. It would still be dry. It's the lack of fluid in their diet and the very different digestive system that makes them crap pellets instead of the more human/bear like loaf. Dunno how else to describe it. Enjoy your lunch.

Seriously. You hunt. you had to have seen a gut shot, and been able to examine the contents of a stomack. the grass, and roots and berries, all still look like grass, roots and berries...very little discernable bile content.
