Thanks for the comments, however at the end of the day it was the guys with their hands on the lines and ladders that did the work. Overall I think it was very good to see how every department worked together to halt the extension and limit the additional damage to the structure. Many people out there may not realize the potential that a fire like that presents. It could have very easily extended to several other apartments, possibly the whole building if it were not for very quick and aggressive tactics taken by those that did indeed come out to help. Many many thanks to all of the Volunteers from every organization.
I want to breifly comment on some other rumors and concerns that I have heard from the public. Please don't think for one moment that a sprinkler system will handle every fire that it could encounter. This was a fire that started on the rear porch of a second floor apartment and then autoextended (walked up the outside) to the apartment above and the cockloft. Once the fire is above the sprinkler heads (there are not any in the cockloft area) it already has the upper hand. The only active mitigation at that point is to open the ceiling on the top floor, get a vent hole in the roof, and get a line on the fire ASAP. With wind driving the fire, this has to happen even faster.
In the end, these guys and gals did exactly what they signed up to do. They assisted their fellow citizens. I think many people forget that they too can help. If someone, anyone out there is reading this and thinks that they would like to be a part of this, contact your local fire or ems dept and see what type of programs they have for someone like YOU. I know that Station 9 is always in need of members, I only mention them because that is where I volunteer.
This fire was doubly sad for me as these are my neighbors as well. I live in the same community, a little further back in the community, but still in Laurel Glenn. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the involved families. I hope that all of them are able to get back on their feet very swiftly. Stay safe out there!!!
