Heres what I found out:

The number of exits required are based on the capacity. Number of persons
50 - 499 persons - 2 remote exits (minimum)
500 - 999 persons - 3 remote exits (minimum)
1000 or more persons - 4 remote exits

For current structures, it would depend on when they were built as to what code they followed during construction. And, if you're referring to a building on a military installation, they can do whatever they want.

What determines if a room in a building needs 2 exits?
Sick and tired of trampling those old ladies to get to that one exit when the bell goes off? :georgefromseinfeld:

Use group, construction type and occupancy of the building (these aren't random things they are defined in the applicable building code). You should have an Occupancy Permit posted somewhere in the building (usually around a front entrance) that states that information. It (the Occupancy Permit) should also tell you what version of the building code the building was constructed under. The Occupancy Permit should also tell you what agency issued the OP and they can provide you with the information.

We recently went thru this at work. There were 4 personnel that occupied a large warehouse. There was one main entrance door and a large roll up door. There were smoke detectors and sprinklers and 2 fire extinguishers. We were told if personnel occupied the warehouse 8 hours a day, which was the case, 2 main entrance/exit doors were needed. The roll up door did not count as an exit.

I have a 6X12 box trailer with a drop down ramp door. The manufacturer put a "exit sign" above the ramp door. :ohwell:
