Fire in Bryanttown

The occupants, mother, Shevon Conley, 31, and her six children between the ages of one to eleven, were not all accounted for as personnel arrived on scene

Maybe it's just me, but if (knock on wood & pray to God) my house did ever catch on fire, I would never go outside without my children. I would die trying to make sure they got out first!!!!!!!!!!

Depending on inside conditions, the mother might not have been able to get to the child. The article doesn't say how the mother and children got out of the house, but only that two children were inside while the rest were outside the residence. I'm sure the mother did all she could do given the environment she was in.

It may also be the way the story was written! It states 3 of the kids where inside, 2 where rescued and one passed away. Thats half your damn kids inside a burning house women...

In the article I read, two children were found inside the home and one of them did not survive. The fire started in the room where the dead child was found. I am to believe the fire quickly engulfed this room, and probably made it impossible for the mother to reach her child.

I'm sure an updated article will be published with more accurate information, but for now all we can do is speculate.

An unconscious two-year-old girl was rescued from the home by firefighters

they quickly placed a ladder to the rear of the home and ushered a three year old girl to safety.

The body of the five-year-old boy was located inside the bedroom where the fire originated

I am not really trying to bash the mom, I was more just saying that I don't think I could ever leave my home knowing it was burning and my kids where still inside. Be damned my life, I would get them out!!!

To be fair, it was two landscapers that helped evacuate the mother and her children. I'm sure they tried everything they could to get the children out of the house, but as was said before, it seems like smoke and fire conditions batted them back.

Ok so it is the way the article is written then... I feel sorry for all of them, that is a horrible thing to have to go through, no matter how things happened...

to be fair, the article states it was a "The home is a one story, single family dwelling". Is there a reason they needed a ladder to evacuate? I can tell you right now, that if my kid was trapped in a burning house I wouldn't wait for someone to hand me a ladder to get my kids out, even if I was on a second level home. Something isn't right here, IN MY OPINION.

God bless those landscapers for helping! They stepped in and became hero's yesterday!

The mother was charged 1 year ago for leaving the kids unattended. I smell a fish.

See thats what I was saying...

I wasn't trying to bash anyone, just stating what I would do and I know I would die trying to get my kids (all of them) out...

But sometimes, even as a parent you can't save everyone..
Very sad all the way around.

From the film, it looks like a one story with a bastment and the yard slopes down in the back. May not be the case here but I have seen homes where the bedroom windows are high in the wall and the sill is almost five feet above the floor. Hate to say it but the 5 year old was most likely dead before anybody knew there was a fire.

I'm not saying something is or isn't in question here. They (landscapers, mother) tried, and it's obvious, with conditions present, that those that weren't in PPE could not reach the child.

Raw Video: Fatal Fire in Charles County - NBC Washington

It looks like a smallish house, so the heat and smoke are layering on each other in a relatively confined area. It wouldn't take long for any heat to progress through the house and to make a rescue attempt by anyone not properly equipped would be very difficult. I can't really tell where the child's bedroom is, but the source of origin was (reported) to be the child's bedroom who perished. There's not much you can do with that, unfortunately.
