Fireplace

I have a fireplace that does not have a screen. I was going to order a screen that mounts to the face of the opening but of course when I measure the opening it isn't square. I think the company could make an odd-sized one, but I wonder how well the screen would work if the thing was out of square. and I can't get one of those stand up screens because the brick in front of the fire settled towards the room so it would always be in danger of falling into the room. So can I operate my fireplace safely without a screen if I get a grate that angles to the back and a fireproof hearth rug?

You should be able to get one with rectangular measurements or for a free standing one get shims to keep it standing level.

:yeahthat: A possibility for the shims, buy some cheap ceramic tile from Lowes. IMO, don't have a fire without some sort of a screen. One popping ember, on the carpet or furniture when your not in the room, and I think you can figure out what's next.

Should have been around last year, I would have given you a wood stove insert.
Did you install a new insert, pelletstove? I'm looking to replace my wood stove insert. Trying to decide what to repalce it with.

Was talking to ogre, but if you're going to replace you're woodstove I would recommend a pellet stove. I replaced my wood stove with a pellet stove and couldn't be happier. Cost me Under $300 to heat my house for the winter Nov till now), but that was after the initial cost of the stove. The regular heat would kick "ON" once in awhile, but it wasn't much.

If the screen won't fit because the fireplace isn't square, how would he get a square wood stove insert to fit

I bought a screen/glass door unit from Lowe's a couple of years ago. It attaches to the fireplace with a pair of clamps. There's enough slop in the way the clamps fit that it'll work in a crooked fireplace (crooked within reason, of course, like an inch or less).

The ceramic tile idea (for shims under a stand-up screen) is brilliant. It should work well. You can glue the tiles onto the brick to keep them from moving around.

Welcome aboard!
