There are cheaper ways to get into it, one option being to rent, another one is to get an inexpensive one like ours to play with, see if you like it. No cupholders or rod holders, although you can ad ones later.
Cost was $260 each, they are Perception Swifty 9.5s. Small and light (30lbs) enough to sling on a shoulder and carry a short distance to the water. Very stable, wide cockpit. Not suitable for the ocean, or big rivers, but great for flatwater,or mild rivers. Paddles are Seasense from K-mart, for $20 each they work fine, breakdown in half for storage. PFDs were $30 each. Not kayak specific, but work just fine.
Like buying a 250cc as your first motorcycle, buying a small kayak to start may backfire, and you want to go bigger pretty fast. Had ours a bout a year now, and I'll be okay for the rest of the summer, maybe get a larger one next year.
As far as rentals, I found theres a place up in DC, Jacks Boathouse, looks like a great way to try it. they are right below the Key Bridge. I plan on doing the "launch your own for $5.00" deal so we can kayak around the Capitol.
