That's a "tick"; a "tic" is something else entirely, and you don't want to go sticking a knife through a tic (unless it belongs to someone else and is extremely annoying).

Probably not long, although I haven't seen any commotion over the "botfly removal" videos when they remove a poor innocent botfly larva from it's warm nesting place.


By the way - if anyone reading this has not seen a 'botfly removal' on YouTube, I highly recommend it to one and all. It's very educational, so make sure the kids get to watch too!
