College of Southern Maryland (CSM) students enrolled in the First Year Seminar (FYS) chipped in as a team to purchase a bicycle for a 7-year-old boy from the Leonardtown Campus-based Giving Tree initiative where local families are adopted and gifts are donated by staff and students.
In addition, the Leonardtown Student Association hosted an annual holiday party on campus and wrapped the donated gifts Dec. 10.

“I am so proud of them for wanting to participate and give back to the community,” said CSM FYS Instructor Beverly Dearstine-Russell.
In 2018, CSM began offering its FYS, a course described by its creators to students as “one of the most important and engaging courses you will take.” The FYS is designed to foster skills in time management, studying, communication, career exploration, self-awareness, critical thinking, and appreciation of collaboration and diversity.
“We want to give students tools to navigate college once they come through our doors and the ability to navigate once they leave our doors,” shared CSM Academic Affairs Vice President Dr. Eileen Abel, at the time of the launch of the seminar series. “We want to prepare students for success with us and beyond us.”
