WASHINGTON - Air samples gathered last week contain radioactive materials that confirm that North Korea conducted an underground nuclear explosion, National Intelligence Director John Negroponte’s office said Monday.

In a short statement posted on its Web site, Negroponte’s office also confirmed that the size of the explosion was less than 1 kiloton, a comparatively small nuclear explosion. Each kiloton is equal to the force produced by 1,000 tons of TNT.

“Analysis of air samples collected on October 11, 2006, detected radioactive debris which confirms that North Korea conducted an underground nuclear explosion in the vicinity of P’unggye on October 9, 2006,” the statement said.

Ok, so they have a nuclear bomb but what does that mean to us?
Do you think that they will come into the technology for long range?

Why? Are we only worried about an attack on the US?

If they hit Japan, that will not only cripple residents there but that will cripple the technology sector for decades. Remember, just about anything that's developed is in Japan.

And, yeah, they can hit the U.S... Contrary to what American media reports, their test-launch of the t-2 missile in July was a success. Went exactly where N. Korea wanted it to. All they have to do is put a nuclear warhead on that bad boy and launch it for D.C.

Granted we'll probably shoot it down before it goes anywhere but that only spells the end for them because us dropping a MOAB on them is perfectly justified then :coffee:

And don't forget this, we're still at war with North Korea. We never signed any peace treaties so between their actions and the fact that we're still at war, that MOAB is justified now... Espically when Poynyang's running off about they're gonna attack the United States if sanctions are passed and all. If I was Mr. Bush, I wopuld've said "Sanctions been passed, guess they're gonna attack us now. Oh well, let me get some coffee. Whoops was that the nuclear bomb drop button - I've been looking for that." :lmao:

GBU-43B, "Mother Of All Bombs", or "Massive Ordnance Air Blast" bomb a 21,000 pound weapon.

D@mn. If we did that what do you think the rest of the world would do?

Of course I think we'll be alright as long as the UN sanctions are adhered to and North Korea is reigned back in. The worst thing that could happen is to disregard the sanctions thereby rewarding the behavior they have exhibited.

The thing to remember is this isn't just our problem; it's the world's and as such the world must stand up to those that take the brazen path. If need be we can make the entire peninsula glow without ever stepping foot there, though I doubt if we would ever do it.

Thanks so much.

I'll once again go on record and say that this was not a nuclear explosion. I still believe that this was a conventional explosion. If there's radioactive particles detected this late after the explosion I would guess that the NKs put some radioactive debris in the tunnel before blowing it, or the radioactive particles were released after the explosion and after people started talking about how this bomb was a dud, wasn't a nuclear explosion, etc.

My reasons for saying this is all a fake still seem valid to me:

1. A country that can't even figure out how to reliably generate electricity isn't going to be technologically able to build a nuclear weapon.
2. Since the NKs rely on stolen/purchased plans, materials, components, etc., to build their bomb, and assuming that the Pakistanis were supplying them with those materials, the blast should have been commensurate with a Pakistani explosion. And at only 550 tons it was a mere firecracker.
3. If the bomb was a fizzle, and just the shaped charge detonated and resulted in some small explosion with a radioactive discharge, there isn't anywhere near enough explosive in the warhead of a modern nuclear weapon to make a blast equivalent to 550 tons of TNT.

So in order to believe that this was an actual nuclear blast we would have to believe that the NKs were able to steal/buy plans to build a nuclear weapon that is unlike any nuclear weapon anywhere else in the world; they stole/bought plans for a bigger nuclear weapon and purposefully downgraded the weapon to a point where it's laughable by modern standards (something that the Great Leader's ego would never tolerate), or they built a nuclear warhead and used 550 tons of TNT as a shaped charge rather than the 2-10 pounds everyone else uses. All of these scenarios seem pretty implausible to me.

What does seem plausible is that the NKs dug a hole, put 550 tons of TNT into it, added some radioactive waste, and set it off. Also plausible is that they just put 550 tons of TNT into the hole and when the world started questioning if they had really set off a nuke they started spraying some radioactive particles around since they knew the US was checking for them.
