Racial controversy in a Texas town

March 28: The Chicago Tribune's Howard Witt talks to MSNBC-TV's Amy Robach about the racial tension in Paris, Texas, caused by the sentencing of a black teen to prison.
Just as I suspected, she had a history of behavioral problems in the school and mommy always showed up to the school and cried "racism!"

I watched the interview with the Chicago Tribune's Howard Witt in full and he discussed how Shaquanda was treated unfairly by the school. He mentioned how she was punished for pouring too much paint in a cup and wearing skirts that were too short. I noticed how Mr. Witt CHERRY PICKED evidence and what he wanted to say. Mr. Witt should lose his job, he's not being fair or objective. He's not presenting every avaliable fact that he has, instead he's holding facts back to fuel the story and get more fame. The Chicago Tribune should fire Mr. Witt for his "reporting."

Andy, I listened to that twice. I'm not following you. It looks like the girl was treated unfairly across the board. It looks like she might be a bit of a problem child, but hardly a major trouble maker.

Mr. Witt only listed those two incidents in the school because it fits his agenda. Welcome to the wonderful world of journalism. He has an agenda, it's to spin this story as black girl treated unfairly by racist town.

I think the sentence was harsh, it should've been a year or two. I think she should do time and should be made as an example.

As far as the school goes and as this "plea deal" goes, I'm sure he's missing some facts, to say it nicely.

Regardless, you don't give a kid 7 years in juvvie for minor behavior problems. This judge should be kicked off the bench.

I don't think the whole town is racist - that is just ridiculous - but the judge's sentencing surely raises some eyebrows and makes you wonder just why he imposed such a harsh penalty.

The school board is also racist, as is the juvy facility.

I said she was unfairly sentenced, she should spend some time in juvy, but not 7 years.

Mr. Witt also said the school board pushed for a harsh sentence, citing a long list of behavioral problems. I'm sure she was in trouble for more than spilling paint.

Please provide links to article/s that indicate she had a behavior problem, and what the other incidents were. If you can't, then she was treated unfairly.

Andy, tell us about the black girl(s) who tormented you in school. I think we need to get to the root of this issue.

Cotton and her supports also say a white judge who gave a white 14-year-old girl probation after she was convicted of burning down her family's home treated Shaquanda unfairly.
"This girl was adjudicated delinquent by a jury . . . on assault of a public servant," Allan Hubbard said about Shaquanda. "She pushed the teacher down, and anyone who does that will continue to be prosecuted to the level of the law that is allowed under the Texas Family Code. It doesn't matter what color they are."

Hubbard said that Shaquanda was offered two years' probation if she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor assault, a plea deal that Creola Cotton refused because her daughter, who has no previous criminal history, said she did not shove or push the teacher's aide. Hubbard said that after a jury trial on the felony charge of assault on a public servant, the judge sentenced Shaquanda to a minimum of a year in a youth facility because the mother would not cooperate in establishing home-supervised probation.

They don't exsist, because the reporter covering it has an agenda. When he says a long list of incidents, than cherry picks two examples, what is there to say. Call me cynical, but I'm sure there is alot more to this. The media's making it out to be all these people are out to get her.

Mr. Witt also said the mother made numerous claims of racism against the school board because of punishments against the girl.

I don't have time to go cherry picking evidence myself, but if you believe the media doesn't report with a bias, then you are naive.

I'm inclined to believe there's a lot less to this than meets the eye. If she had a history of notable poor behavior, somebody would get that information and put it out there. I know the media reports with bias, but there's just something wrong with this story. I'm not buyin' it.

FACT: This juvenile did NOT receive 7 years in prison. She was given an indeterminate sentence to the Texas Youth Commission, which means her conduct and cooperation with their behavior rehabilitation programs determines when she gets out. Minimum time to complete those programs is 9 months. She entered TYC in March 2006 and could have been out in December 2006 if she was being cooperative. But note that she never had to go to TYC in the first place: she could have gotten probation.

Black leaders in our community, as well as the local chapter of the NAACP, have shyed away from the case because it is an issue of irresponsible parenting. The mother and her fringe, extremist, anti-white organization (Concerned Citizens for Racial Equality) who are aligned with the New Black Panthers want to blame the system and the judge for her daughter being in TYC.

Poor kid.

The district attorney's office in this case wants nothing more than to see this juvenile re-enter society and never cause another problem for herself by following the rules that society puts in place through its various organizations and formats (school, public laws, etc.). It is our position that she's spent more than enough time in TYC - in fact, never had to go there - and that if TYC feels she has learned her lesson, then let her out.

Now why isn't the mainstream media presenting these facts., primairly the one about her sentence to TYC, and it not being 7 years as stated?
