Food Dehydrators

Loper

Animal Poor!
I'm looking to upgrade dehydrators since my second cheapy one just died. It only lasted 2 years. My first is a cheep one as well, but it is over 15 years old and they don't make them anymore. I was looking at the Excaliburs and Cabela's commercial dehydrators. I dehydrate a lot of stuff but mostly for chicken jerky for my dogs.

anyone have any suggestions?

So Excalibur has a 9 tray rear mount air fan but it is only 600 watt.

The Cabela commercial 80 liter is 1600 watt, 12 tray unit. Yet, you would need a designated space for it. At 67 lbs, I can't see moving it around much.

Loper how do you do your chicken jerky? I bought a cheap dehydrator to do Sweet potato treats for my pups - they eat about 10 pounds a week but was thinking maybe trying some chicken too - or turkey.

There are several ways you can do it depending on google. LOL
My tried and true way is buying chicken tenders when they are on sale. If not on sale, BJ's usually has them for 2.99 a lb in big packs. I take a tender and put it between 2 freezer bags and use the flat end of a meat tenderizer and flatten it to about 1/8 inch. Here you can throw them on the dehydrator or you could marinate them in doggie friendly spices.

I just started doing some chamomile and lavendar for calming treats. You can put olive oil on the chicken or spray your drying racks with non stick spray. For the cheapy dehydrators, you will need to rotate the racks every couple of hours and turn the chicken over once and it will take between 10 and 12 hours.

for the sweet taters... do this! Freeze the chicken for an hour, then slice it REALLY thin by hand or shave it off in a mandolin. Wrap those thin pieces around your sweet taters (either in sticks or medalions depending how you cut your sweet taters) and dry for the same amount of time. Your dogs will be doing back-flips to get them. :buddies: and all home-made!!!
