All the stuff with dyes and chemicals and crap, they can do completely away with it for all I care. If I didn't see it on the news I wouldn't even notice. "OMG my Froot Loops are a buck more because they're using vegetable dyes instead of chemical ones!" Yeah, you shouldn't eat that crap in the first place.

I think the government should tax the hell out of junk food to subsidize meat/fruit/veg/dairy and make it more affordable. The sheer volume of garbage in our grocery stores is amazing to me. Who buys that stuff? Why do we need so many cereal choices and flavors of Pop Tarts? Snack chips - why do we need a whole store aisle dedicated to them? I saw Cinnamon Toast Crunch bacon the other day - why is that a thing? Because people aren't eating....bacon? And you have to jazz it up a bit??

Seriously, who is eating all this stuff? And why do the chemist keep creating more??

I'm learning to eat differently because my fiancé points out all the garbage that the food industry puts in "normal" food to make it more appealing to the masses. I agree that it's simply amazing the lengths they go to these days. Apparently someone is buying this crap or they wouldn't be doing it. :sshrug:

When I think back on all the crap I ate in grade school
It's a wonder I'm alive at all
And though my lack good nutrition hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

Lucky Charms

They give us those nice bright colors
Give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a Sunny-D, oh yeah
I got a nice big bowl
I love those little marshmallows
So mama don't take my Sugar Crisps away

If you took all the chips and snacks when I was single
And brought 'em all together for one bite.
Most would still look like they did back when I bought them.
And taste the same they did when times were right.

Crunch Berries

They give us those nice bright colors
Shredded Wheat tan’s a bummer
Makes you think all the world's a Honey day, oh yeah
I got a great big bowl
and I’ve got the milk jug handy
So mama don't take my Cocoa Puffs away

Mama don't take my Honey Crisp,
Mama don't take my Apple Jacks
Mama don't take my Cap'n Crunch away....

Just sneakin' around....
I look at my old school and family photos from the 60s, everyone was skinny as a rail. Then came the 70s, proliferation of fast food and less home-cooked meals. Weight issues and diabetes on the surge.

I was a victim of that. So skinny I used to be able to fit inside one of those tiny school lockers in HS. Got my driver's license, now mobile, had a job, could buy my own stuff rather than fed at home. The availability of cash and crap food led me down a path of overweight that I never really got past.

Add to that the move from blue to white collar labor.

A good first step would be to follow Europe's approach to food additives.

In America, Fanta is colored with Yellow 6 (petroleum-derived) and Red 40 (naphthalene sulfonic acid), artificial food dyes that give the drink its vivid appearance. These synthetic dyes are widely used in American food products but have faced scrutiny over potential health risks like cancer, ADHD, and allergies. The list of American ingredients also includes carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup, and less than 2% of: citric acid, natural flavors, sodium benzoate, modified food starch, and glycerol ester of rosin. For an "orange" drink, it sure is missing orange juice.

In Europe, food regulations are much stricter when it comes to artificial additives. The European Union mandates warning labels and restrictions on the use of certain artificial colors and preservatives, and as a result, many companies use natural, less harmful colorings. Fanta in the U.K., for example, is colored with carrot, pumpkin, and orange fruit extracts, which give it a more muted, natural orange shade.

Hey they grow "meat" in the lab and make it from plants so what could harm could a few additives do?

Because if there wasn't such a variety, people would go back to baking, cooking, and making their own treats. Now we can't have that, now can we?

Same here. We also walked or biked everywhere then too. When I was growing up we were constantly being thrown outside to do some thing other than sit inside doing nothing. But also during that time was when seed oils, fake butters like margarine, HFCS, etc., started to enter the markets heavily in prepackaged foods.

And way too much sugars being added to foods that really don't need extra sugar, like preserves. Strawberry, aprioct, blueberry, etc., are already fruity sweet. No need for more added sugar.
