FoodLion? YUCK!

Shopping at Food Lion is generally for those that can't afford to shop in a clean store or care about the quality of food they wish to eat.

I love Food Lion. Never have a problem there. You must be one of those liberals wanting no chemicals on your food. Go to Annapolis if that's what you need. real food is at Food Lion.
wow, you must be one of those conservatives that likes mutated babies and cancer, thanks for reminding me why i'm a proud liberal :yahoo:

Firstly, why did you go into Food Lion expecting anything less?

Second, the California Food Lion is second worst only to the one on Great Mills.

They're small stores that are understaffed usually. That leaves little time for cleaning up after spending most of your shift stocking the aisles, that are empty there anyway.

Third, the employees are treated like dirt. Therefore, the employees treat their store like dirt for the most part.
I agree.
I hate FL with a passion, but I will go in there if I really have to (which I am trying to remember the last time I even went into a FL). Usually if you have noticed (or at least the ones in SI and Lusby) that the turn over rate is bad. It is rare to actually see an employee who stay's at a FL. If you go into a Giant, it is always the same people (good sign obviously). While I am not much on unions, I feel that in this case, go to a Giant (union store) and then go to a FL (non-union) and see the difference.

As far as the out of date stuff. If I remember correctly, it was not just putting out of date stuff back on the shelf and trying to cover it up (which if it is actually printed on the actual lable the "sell by date," I do not see how they could have covered it up w/o making it obvious they were doing that). But they were taking old meat and grinding it in with "new" meat or taking meat that had fallen on the floor and passing it off as clean. That is another reason that if I do go into FL, it is for name brands, not their store brands.

:yeahthat: Ain't that the truth! I'm a very, very loyal Giant shopper and will go to Safeway if their sale seems to beat Giant's. But, geez - you can't buy anything that isn't on sale in Giant. And the same goes for Safeway - who is also union.

I rarely, if ever, buy anything in Giant that isn't already on sale. I drive my husband crazy because he wants to just put stuff in the cart that is full price. :smack:

I rarely buy stuff unless it is on sale at Giant either (Pepsi/Coke, no difference to me, but I won't buy Stouffer's unless it is on sale, so I just stock up on that, as I hate most other frozen dinners, other than Marie Calender's). I also find that Giant has a better selection of lets say Stouffer's than FL. Their produce is better, and like stated their turn over rate is way better and I get to know my service people and they always seem to be way happpier than FL. So I pretty much agree with what Johnjrval424 had to say.

My point being, while FL prices are cheaper, it is not worth the hassel of ####ty employee that work for a company that does not give a crap about giving the person a smile once in a while, bad selection of groceries, crap produce (I got my fair share of bad grapes, pears, and apples at FL when I have bought produce there to were I am buying grapes there again), and dirty stores.

OK rant over, back to our daily lives :)

Thanks for scaring the crap out of me guys. I'm moving to Mechanicsville at the end of the month. The only grocery stores close to me are McKays and Food Lion. I'm not necessarily happy about my choices of stores - especially after this thread, but I'll deal with it.

I guess that i'll get whatever produce I can from the amish folks at Rte 6 and then go over to Nicks for meats ... and who knows where I'll buy the rest of my goods.

I'm spoiled where I'm at now. I've got 5 grocery stores on the way home from work and there's a Trader Joe's within 10 minutes from my place. :( Boo ... no TJ's down in St Mary's .....

Not so much for Shoppas Warehouse prices. Although, a lot has gone up in the past year due to the economy and shortages.

Giant and Safeway have traditionally been expensive. I never knew why people would go there unless they really enjoyed the store that much more.

I work at Giant and must say after working at almost retail store around here, they are by far the best. The employees are treated well and always fair. I believe that reflects on the customer service. I didn't always shop there because of the reputation of being so expensive. Since I've worked there, I shop there and with the sales they have I come home with just as much as I did at Food Lion for about the same cost. Alot of their items are actually cheaper than Food Lion. I'm NOT pushing to shop at Giant, I'm just saying what my experience has been.

My brother has OCD and worked at Food Lion, he started obsessing about expiration dates. While people were checking out he would check thier yogurts and milks, cheese, soup, and found ALOT of things outdated. They kept writing him up for it, but maybe they should have people checking this stuff.

it's not just Food Lion. You really need to check the date stamps on things. When Harvest Market was here we shoed the manager the dates on the milk, yogart etc and nothing changed. They left the old stuff on the shelf for the next sucker to buy.

Basically, if the store turns over the mechandise fast enough there is no problem, if not expect to see stuff on the shelf past it's expiration date.

Go south to shop. Really, I had a house in Mechanicsville and after one trip each to Food Lion and McKays I decided to just drive south. Even grocery shopping with a baby and toddler it was still worth the extra 10 minutes in the car. :yay:
