Problem at Hand
You could take it to the Geek Squad and they could pretend to fix it for you for like 160 bucks
Full versions of adaware and spybot (only like 19 bucks, with some neat features compared to the free versions)
Are pretty banging.
If you are a DoD employee or contractor, you should be able to get a free or really discounted version of Norton …………used to be the case a year or two ago.
But if Windows is recognizing the OS files as being jacked up, a reinstall is your only 100% at this point.
Only backup documents, no program files to restore with .doc, .xls, .ppt, .pst, .jpg, .bmp, .mp3, .mpg
Reinstall.
Put on a virus scanner of some sort
SCAN YOUR BACKUP FILES!!!!!!
Those files you backed up might be messed up. They can have stuff wrapped into them that you would not be able to see.
Hopefully you didn’t lose data
**********DO ALL OF THIS WITHOUT AN INTERNET CONNECTION*****************
Ten to one it will run faster, and it is probably some sort of spyware/tracking software dependent on the internet to run and do anything. (I am not sure the extent of your issues)
ALSO…Google "services that should be runnning on (INSERT OS HERE)"
Check the services that are running, kill any that you do not need.
IF…and this is a BIG IF…you can find out what you have, you could look it up online…you probably arent the first or last to get it, it is ok it happens to more people than you know (feels like an STD pep talk I know
) there should be isntructions on what to do to free yourself
My issues with Trend the other day
I worked on a computer the other day, it was a new Dell (out of the box) with Win XP Pro installed on it. It came prebundled with Trend Micro Chillin (believe that was the correct name).
Anyways…..If you had any of the mail settings in place for both incoming and outgoing, it would not allow Metrocast email to work using outlook.
Long story short, I didn’t feel like sitting around, so#I just did the incomming mail filter. ( between the router firewall, and windows firewall everything should be pretty close to legit anyways)
