ANNAPOLIS, Md. – “Forever chemicals” are showing up almost everywhere they have looked for it.
It seems it is in crabs and fish now.
I will not crab or fish in any tidal water of this State or any other State near Maryland. That is not to say that there is not a problem in other State tidal waters as well. Or, even overseas fish for that matter. Look at Japan, their fish is beleived to be "radioactive" by some people. Could radioactive fish be shipped to a market or restuarant near you? Hopefully not. I used to love crabbing. I used to love fishing. Eating or catching crabs or fish has become dangerous. To start out with, the crab or fish that you catch could have been in contaminated water with Vibro Vulnificus on the shell of a crab or the pot the crab is in. If you pull it up and either the crab, fish or the crab pot itself cuts your skin and makes you bleed and if the Vibro is present, you can have a potential life threatening condition. Dr. Rita Calwell from the University of Maryland gave a very good lecture about it at the Calvert Marine Museum years ago. She was up in the years then. However, she designated two local experts about Vibro Vulnificus that are qualified to lecture and write about it as well. I know Vibro typically isn't around this time of year though. But, the Forever Chemicals are.:
Are pesticides forever chemicals?
WASHINGTON – More than 1,400 pesticides contain active ingredients that meet Maine's definition for the toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS, according to a new analysis of data from the state by Environmental Working Group researchers.Jun 6, 2023
However, it is widely used in cooking and many other products as well.
Bio-solid fertilizer application is another potential source of PFAS contamination in Agriculture. Bio-solids are typically the composted waste from human sewage treatment plants. The PFAS bio-accumulates in the sewage treatment system and follows the bio-solid fertilizer product to farm fields where it is applied.
This is from a simple on line search. There a lot of information out there about it. PFAS is far more wide spread than people know. Again, it is not just the crabs and fish. But, continuing to use it and other dangerious chemicals on our farm fields isn't helping us. And what do you think or legislators say about it? Good question.
The first I heard about this story was from a reporter with the Chesapeake Journal. . Now the "Forever Chemicals" are far more widespread than first thought. It seems to be everywhere. I now wonder if any seafood is safe.
In particular, look at the law which allows farmers to farm their fields so very close to our tidal waters. I heard within 50 feet. It could be closer. We have legislators to thank for stupid laws. What can be done about it? That's a good question. The first step is NOT to allow any farm to put down chemicals on their fields that are so close to any tidal water. Do I think this wouild "ever" happen? Of course not.
