He has been around for a while. He was once with NSA then the State Department.,he worked under Bush and then Obama, but when Trump decided to do something he didn't like he quit.
For all I know about Syria he might be right, but he isn't the President and Trump is.

As I see the State Department they have for years felt that they should be running foreign policy instead of the President.
Bush should have cleaned out that nest when he was President.
