Foster Mom

I am considering becoming one to pets who are in shelters that can not house them during the winter months. Does anyone have any information or tips they wouldn't mind sharing? TIA

What do you mean by shelters that can't house animals during winter months.
Are considering fostering a dog, cat, other?

Appy, I'm not sure what you mean by that. I foster for Calvert all the time.

Fostering means being able to take in and care for the animal hopefully until it is adopted. Some people do find that the animal doesn't work in their home and return it to foster another or change their mind all together.

Fostering isn't for everyone though, and it does have conditions that need to be discussed before hand.

And, you would probably want to stick with fostering in your own county to make it easier for medical appointments, showing, delivering the animal to events and such.

We are always looking for foster homes. Our website is www.adoptaspotdalrescue.com and home base is in Chesapeake, VA, however, we have foster homes in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. You provide the love, home, and food, and Adopt A Spot provides the medical, vetting, etc. Vetting in this area is done at Well Pet Clinic. Foster homes out of the Chesapeake/Virginia Beach area do not have to attend adoption events. For fosters not in the area, they have a binder with pics, bio, etc. on each dog.

Well I am interesting in adopting but when I was on Petfinder one day I saw an ad requesting foster moms and I applied to become one. Haven't heard back from them yet though. Unfortunately, I would love to foster cats but I am allergic, cats are so cuddly and make cute christmas picture cards this time of year. But pooches do too.

where do you live? I would not mess with the Calvert one. I had some dealings with them and they are really hard to deal with and do not stand up to there end..

I am in St Mary's Co but the ad that I responded to was in NC Assisi was the name of it.

I do doggie foster care with SMAWL. I currently have a American Bulldog mix and a Boxer mix. It is very hard not to get attached to them. It is very rewarding, but also some work.

This is how I felt too. I think I didn't pay attention before responding to the ad and they didn't when they sent me the application. But, if the need is that great I will do what I can. But I totally agree on doing this closer to home and I shared that with the lady at the shelter that maybe I could adopt one of those pets if it would be easier than traveling back and forth for fostering and showings.

Well the difference would be that I would have to follow the agency's rules to the tee for the pets and that could be a wee bit challenging if it requires a strict daily schedule but other than that I think I should be ok. I only want smalls pets and probably one at a time.

I love my foster dogs, and Oreo actually had been placed, but she was a return. That is the only reason that we have two dogs right now.

What makes the difference for SMAWL or other local agencies to choose someone to adopt or foster pets. I have been having a hard time getting this done.
