Charles Co. Four CCPS Unified Bocce teams place at state invitational

Four Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Unified Bocce teams earned awards at the Unified Bocce State Invitational held Feb. 13 at Hagerstown Community College.

A team from Maurice J. McDonough High School took first place in division three of the event. A second team from McDonough earned third place in division two of the event, and a La Plata High School team received a third-place award in division three of the tournament. A third team from McDonough received fourth place among teams competing in division one.

Unified sports teams include a combination of students with and without disabilities who train together and compete against other unified teams. Each year, the state Bocce tournament is separated into divisions of play. Teams compete in specific divisions during the event based on criteria such as age, gender and physical ability to ensure all athletes have an opportunity to play and be a part of a team.

Students on the McDonough team that earned a first-place win include seniors Alexis Bourassa, Kennedy Bradshaw, Emily Edwards, Jaylene Logan and Carrie Wagner, juniors Zach Wagner and Luke Lyddane, and sophomore Sierra Campbell. McDonough teacher David Bradshaw and Matthew Petricoin, a teacher at Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School, coach the team.

The team from McDonough that earned third place in division two includes freshmen Katharine Cadwalader, Jason Haley, Hannah Krauel, Danny Mears, Max Petricoin and Ashaunna Stewart, juniors Morgan Krauel and Mayci Pagano, and seniors Marlexus Castillo and Zaire Johnson. Bradshaw and Petricoin also coach this team.

La Plata High School’s third-place winning team includes seniors Shane Crockett, Emily Depew, Kavon Green Johnson, Anthony Macri, Abbey Magsakay and Jarrett Mulloy, and sophomore Peyton Krahling. La Plata teachers William Boehm and Gilbert Sandoval coach the team.

A team from McDonough earned fourth place in division one of the event. Team members are seniors Angelo Drayton and Mya Smith, junior J.J. Otey, sophomores Sophia Bourassa, David Glorioso, Emmanuel Grant, Skylar Murray, Trent Parker and Kori Sheckells, and freshman Ava Lyddane. Bradshaw and Petricoin also coach this team.

A total of 32 teams from schools in Allegany, Baltimore City, Frederick, Garrett, Montgomery, Prince George’s and Washington counties participated in the state event. Earlier this school year, teams from all seven high schools participated in a regional event and teams from four schools advanced to the state.

CCPS partnered with Special Olympics Maryland in 2008 to offer high schools students of all abilities the opportunity to participate in sports programs. Additionally, several Charles County public middle and elementary schools now offer unified sports teams for students.
