That's not really what the 44% means. Le Pen shifted her economic proposals to be almost as far leftist as Mélenchon so that she could peel off votes.
This is what a populist does. France and in fact Europe dodged a bullet.

Um, Ron? Macron isn’t a 79-year-old is constantly getting confused and two years from now, it will be even worse. The system is not the same, to start with. Plus, people might not like Macron, but they don’t think he’s demented. Joe Biden would be 82 in 2024. If you think he will be running, much less winning, that’s not living in reality.
No, Biden isn’t going to win with the approval numbers or the deteriorating brain he has now — no matter how much Klain spins. Thirty-six percent in France isn’t the same as in America. But, Ron Klain is not only acknowledging people hate Biden; he thinks it isn’t going to matter. How dismissive of the opinion of the people can you be? Before we comment on France we need to look hard at about 40% of Americans who elected and still think Joe Biden is doing a good job. We need to take a look at AOC and how the democrats are making fools of themselves agreeing with this bar maid.

He lost both elections, first and second round (Hindenburg failed to get a majority in the first round). He worked the system to get Hindenburg to appoint him Chancellor, something Hindenburg was against, but he had a majority in the Reichstag. Hindenburg relented. Sometime after, Hindenbrg dies, Hitler passes a law basically abolishing the role of President and makes himself Leader and Chancellor of the Reich ("Fuhrer").
It would be more accurate to say through corruption and politics, he stole power. Still, it WAS the people who elected Nazis. But not the majority at all.
