Free ebooks?

I recently received a Nook. I've downloaded free ebooks from bn.com and checked out ebooks (very limited selection) from the library as well.

I found smashwords.com today, but I haven't used it yet.

Anybody else have a site they use for free ebooks?

I am not going to slam any sites but put a warning out there. Many of these "free" ebook sites are giving you illegal, pirated ebooks. The authors are not getting their royalties. This may not sound like a big deal but if one person buys a paper book, they can share it with only one person at a time. The royalties lost are only a few dollars. If someone posts an ebook on one of these pirate sites, thousands can download this book costing the author hundreds in royalties. This is how they make their living. This is how they can afford to write the stories we enjoy. Downloading a pirated ebook is just plan stealing.....accepting stolen goods.

Most authors try to get their books removed from these "free" sites. It's very difficult as many are based in foreign countries. As tempting as it is to read your favorite author's newest release free, unless their publisher or a authorized, recognized why cheat the author.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

I appreciate it, but your soapbox was totally uncalled for. If you actually looked you would have noted that all the sites I shared make a point of listing what kind of books are free and why and if there is any concerns with it not being free to let them know and they'll remove it.

In case you are clueless, bn.com is Barnes and Noble, and the library always offers books for free. The other websites share books that are pre-1930 (classics) or are allowed to be lended or shared by rights, or have been offered up by the individuals that write/publish/share their very own ebooks (usually bloggers).

Now, when there are plenty of books being offered for free by authors and publishers, why should I buy it?

I'm well aware of what bn.com is. I also have several friends who are authors that have to keep asking people to take their books off of different sites. Some sites will claim that they have permission to post books that they do not. Likewise, some ebayers will also state that they have permission, and they do not. Many people new to ebooks to not realize that there are sites that steal books.

In the meantime, enjoy your reader and all the great books that are out there.
