All....PLEASE READ - THIS COULD SERIOUSLY SAVE YOU MONEY!! ARE YOU GETTING WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR??? Please consider this a consumer's warning!!!! I have recently moved into a new home near NAS Gate 3 where the only internet provider is the cable company. I signed up for the 4 Meg download service back in November and still have not been getting anything near that. I consistenly see speeds as low as 300 K. I've contacted the cable company on numerous occasions, they have come out to troubleshoot and have finally admitted that the problem lies with their hardware. They have flat out admitted that they have more customers than their equipment can handle - so the customer is paying the penalty by receiving extremely slow download speeds, without any notification - and worse, we are still paying the bill!! So now, every time the bill shows up, I place a quick call to the internet company and they credit me for the entire month.

SO HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO...Use the links below to check your internet speed. The cable company will tell you that if you are getting anything less than 500K below the speed you are paying for - then there is a problem. For example, if you are paying from 4 meg download and are only getting 3.4 meg or less AT ANY TIME, then there is something wrong with your service. Then simply call the cable company at 301.373.3201 (prior to 6pm) and tell them you NOT GETTING WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR and you want a credit.

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ (Cable Co. recommends this one)
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/
http://performance.toast.net/

Please take this serious and check your speeds....It's really sad that our cable company, which pretty much has a monopoly on high speed service in this county (St. Mary's), drags their feet in fixing problems that they know is their fault, doesn't bother to voluntarily share that information with it's customers, BUT feels VERY comfortable taking our money!!!

A Sincerely Concerned Consumer,

The original post on this thread is NOT spam..It is a public service announcement to help make sure people aren't paying for something they are NOT getting.

You're all F'in Mad...
Metrocast has had equipment issues in Lexington Park over the last week. But other than that, the cable modem service has been excellent.

I can NOT speak of areas anywhere other than where I live. Once again...I live in Lexington Park, off Baywoods Drive (near NAS Gate 3).

Also..Please check your speeds at multiple times throughout the day. Typically you will see the slower speeds in the evening (after 4pm)....BUT The cable company still holds to the fact that you should never see speeds less than 500K of what you are paying for.

You are getting exactly what you paid for.

I wont get into the deep technical details but basically:

The Cable Company has you on a Public Ring, this is divulged in the paperwork that you signed/authorized for service. just because you didnt read it and or understand it, isnt the cable companies fault. there is no reason you couldnt have said "what does this mean"

You are at the mercy of others on that same ring. more People, using the bandwidth on that ring limits the amount of bandwidth available to you. less people more bandwidth to you.

its done this way to reduce the capitol costs the Cable company, your house is already wired for Cable TV, in order to offer you Cable internet service.

I'm fully aware of the "less people more bandwidth to you" situation you speak of. I am simply saying that the cable company has clearly and directly stated that if someone is getting speeds 500K or less than what they signed up for, then there is a problem. They have come to my residence on multiple occaisions, checked all my lines and equipment (both in house and at the street) and have replied with "we have more customers than our hardware can support" - admitting the problem lies with them. So therefore I am NOT getting what I paid for because what I paid for was 4 meg service (minimum 3.5 meg) and I consistently have less than 1 meg and sometimes as low 500K or less (at all times of the day). And furthermore, the cable company refunding my 3 months worth of internet bills is additional proof. And to top it all, please keep in mind that I was the one who initiated all this by checking my speed....The cable company was NOT the one who said, "hark, we know we have insuffucient hardware to support our customers - so we are not providing them with the download speeds they are paying for - so lets notify them as a courtesy and let them know our plan to resolve OUR issue."

Bottomline...In the location I mentioned above, the Cable Company has clearly stated they do not have sufficient hardware to support their customers. People who have cable internet in that area should simply take it upon themselves to check their speeds at the links listed above and make sure they are getting what THE CABLE COMPANY SAYS THEY SHOULD GET - which is NO LESS THAN 500K of what they signed up for. If you are not, you should do what I have done and contact the cable company and demand a credit - which they have now done for 3 months!!!

All I am trying to do is get people to ask for credits (if they are experiencing the same problem I am) so the cable company will get off their butts and fix this problem!!!!

This is very simple...I sorry some people can't understand.

yes diego you are right.

Getting speeds lower that 500K is not acceptable. However, you have to consider that the speed tests are designed to test the signal path from your computer to a remote computer. Sometimes these "remote" computers are located half-way across the country. In most cases, the path from your computer to the "remote" comouter must pass several junctions which all contain massive amounts of traffic, i.e. users like yourself. These speed tests are intended as "guides" and are not extremely accurate. Is there a way that you can have the local cable company test the connection from their local loop to your computer?

I think that would be more of an accurate test.

As for which speedtest site to use....as I mentioned in my original post, the first link (www.speakeasy.net) is the one recommended by the cable company. It has multiple paths you can use to check...I have ALWAYS been using the Washington DC path..its the closest. In any case..even if I used a path that went to Seattle and back...I should not see a 3meg loss!!!

Willie...please call the cable company and let us know how it works out.

Thanks

I was quoting you, 300k is not my problem. If they advertise 4 meg and you only get 3 meg, SAHRAB's answer would apply. If you only get 300k, it's broke.
