So what went down? I heard an F1 tornado hit the Charlotte Hall/Hughesville area about 8:32 p.m. with some damage. No injuries or deaths reported.

Lots of tree damage. I believe a couple of houses got some damage. My mom lives on Bach Dr where it started. Minimal damage. Neighborhood lost some trees.

Well it first hit right in Melody Acres area off of Bach and Handel Dr's in a group of trees in the woods then skipped over a couple of yards (SandieGarry your Mom's included) and really took out some huge trees at the end on Gershwin and then kind of skipped over some more houses and took out a lot of trees and branches in several yards before jumping pretty much over Rt.5 and then hit the Food Lion area, especially the Bradford pears in the parking, then skipped to Indian Creek Dr. area and some more trees down and one on a house. Then it seemed to really hit White Dr. and Dukesville La off Mt Wolfe Rd. with many trees down. From there the next really visible damage was along Rt. 231 in the area of Barney Dr.
A house on Handel Drive sustained major damage from several trees that crashed through the sunroom and into the dining room. With several trees around the house in the yard, it was hard to see the real damage from the street. It took the tree company 2 days to remove all the trees either on the house or against the house in the backyard.
It seemed that it kind of skipped up then came down then back up, if it had really stayed on the ground there would have been extensive damage.

Ok, my mistake earlier. My mom's place did get some of the high winds. It snapped off a dozen huge poplar limbs and scattered about in the back yard. It took me several hours today to clean up the mess. Apparently, no one had gone down back until Thursday when the guy came to mow the lawn. I had some help thank goodness. A large poplar fell in the woods behind her place and crashed through the neighbor's fence. Next door to that neighbor, several large trees went down. They might be the first point of destruction. I was amazed at the level of destruction after seeing "minor" damage up close.

My wife and I were stationed at Wright-Patterson near Dayton, OH. in 81 - 82 and 91 - 94.
One could still see damage from the following, both times.
A quote from the Ohio History Center.

"On April 3, 1974, an F5 category tornado struck Xenia, Ohio. The tornado that struck Xenia was just one of at least 148 tornados that occurred in the South and Midwest in a twenty-four period. This was the worst outbreak of tornados recorded in the twentieth century."

Well its hard to see all the damage since most of it was in peoples backyards. Pretty much all has been cleaned up now with a few exceptions. I would have thought there would have been some tree damage or at least a lot limbs down in your Mom's back 40 (lol). Just down next to your Mom's in the woods looks like the spot where it first hit. Spoke with the owner of that property yesterday and he said it was a mess inside the woods. Just from the street you can see a big hollow section of trees broken all up, then it knocked over a tree into the new neighbors yard and then skipped to the right side of your Mom's and really did some damage to 3 yards, with fences down and several really large oak trees pretty much covering the whole backyard of one house. They were lucky that nothing landed on the house.
Ive been there 44 years and no other storm ever came close to this one. I already had a tree company lined up to trim 3 of my maples and 2 of my bradford pears. One is way to close to the house now. It just so happened that its the same tree company that removed all the tree's off my neighbors house. While they were there he also took care of 2 of my tree's.
Cobb Island Woodworking are really great folks to hire.

Yep, the 2 large oaks and knocked down fence is the yard next to mom's. They just bought the house a few months ago. It's a mess. There is a huge poplar back in the woods that fell over the same neighbor's fence. I did see the same stuff that you wrote about. Luckily, no serious damage to houses or people.

I just met the guy yesterday. Funny thing, he said they were gonna replace all of the fence around the yard anyway. Most is chain link, some privacy (for good reason), Nothing hit the house or the pool.
