So we've been discussing Rosie shooting off her fat mouth on The View! How about this a.m. I'm in the midst of watching it Hasselbeck begins to speak about her kid and Halloween and the Guest Host (don't know her name) breaks in with she's never celebrated it and won't because it's the devils holiday and backs this up with "people who chose to celebrate something, should know the background of said holiday!" WHAT! Obviously, she DID NOT DO HER HOMEWORK! It's infuriating. People can believe what they want and turn something harmless for children into a religious stand BUT get YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE YOU go spouting them accross National TV. THAT GOES FOR YOU TOO ROSIE and BTW you can were all the black you want and IT'LL NEVER BE SLIMMING HUN! :wench:

THANK YOU!!!!!!!! I used to spend Halloween in Mexico, where it is "the day of the dead" when families show respect for passed loved ones. It's a way of honoring their memory. These women are OUT OF CONTROL!!!

"Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Envy is the desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.

Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.

Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work."

If I were Rosie, I might be careful about pointing out others' failings......

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).

The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. In addition to causing trouble and damaging crops, Celts thought that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids, or Celtic priests, to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the volatile natural world, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winter.

To commemorate the event, Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.

During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other's fortunes. When the celebration was over, they re-lit their hearth fires, which they had extinguished earlier that evening, from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter.

By A.D. 43, Romans had conquered the majority of Celtic territory. In the course of the four hundred years that they ruled the Celtic lands, two festivals of Roman origin were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

The first was Feralia, a day in late October when the Romans traditionally commemorated the passing of the dead. The second was a day to honor Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. The symbol of Pomona is the apple and the incorporation of this celebration into Samhain probably explains the tradition of "bobbing" for apples that is practiced today on Halloween.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. In the seventh century, Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints' Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. It is widely believed today that the pope was attempting to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a related, but church-sanctioned holiday. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints' Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. Even later, in A.D. 1000, the church would make November 2 All Souls' Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated similarly to Samhain, with big bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints, angels, and devils. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints', and All Souls', were called Hallowmas.

Finally! Someone who knows the facts! Thank you very much Lord Stanley! Ignorance is sad. Hopefully, whoever sent me that rediculous message learned something from this. Where in the hell did I post anything about Wicca or spells? I guess because christian zealots automatically think witches and Halloween go hand in hand. Smited! HAHAHAHA! :lmao:

It’s no problem.... The true meanings of holidays get lost in translation since most are over commercialized. Unless parents educate children, they only know Halloween as a night to dress up as sponge bob and get free candy

Hell, most kids dont even get dressed up. Last year was bad.... Kids walking around carrying plastic walmart bags, no costume on, expecting candy. Then eating it from house to house and leaving the trash on the streets. My wife and I yelled at 2 kids in our neighborhood after they left trash on our lawn.

Doesn't matter --- effectively, that IS what the holiday is. The "true" meaning of a holiday becomes irrelevant if it isn't celebrated with its original intent in mind.

Words are the same way, by the way - it doesn't matter what the word ONCE meant, it only matters what it means to the people using it. THAT becomes its true meaning.

I'd have to disagree. The only reason that holidays are celebrated the way they are is due to commercialization. If it weren't for stores stock-piling in holiday specific goods, people would actually focus on the true meaning of the holiday...

JMHO.
