Full fridge or nah?

My friend was over the other day and she got in my fridge for water and said, "Dang, girl, you need to go to the grocery store." I said, "Psh, there's plenty of food," and showed her that I had an easy 8 or 10 dinners and breakfast for a week. Plus popcorn and trail mix for snacking.

But I don't keep a lot of food in the house, mostly staples and stuff I know I'm going to want like eggs and low carb tortillas, meat in the freezer, baby lettuce, and bacon. I don't like to buy a bunch of stuff with the intention of making it, then I'm not in the mood but have to eat it anyway because it's perishable. The grocery store is one mile from my house if I get a hankering for something.

So do you stock up and have a fridge/pantry full of food riches, or do you go minimalist and hit the store as needed?

For daily consumption, I keep a couple of days worth because things just go bad before I get to them. However, my prepper side has a storehouse of non-perishables and the freezers are stocked with meats that I find on sale.

I try to stock up on longer-lived items when they are on sale, only usually buy produce on a weekly cadence. I don't like making repeated small trips to find everything I need is full-priced today and my groceries cost 30% more than I expected.

Three freezers packed with pork (sausage, meat cuts, bacon, scrapple), beef (whole Angus every year), fish, crab cakes, etc. Kitchen refrigerator is always jam packed with...well..some of everything. Cupboards and cabinets galore...filled with non-perishable stuff. Rows of shelving packed with long-term freeze-dried etc food containers.

Yeah...we're prepared. ;-)

Every month I make out a dinner menu for the upcoming month. Each week, I only buy what I'll need for the upcoming week's dinner plus the essentials like milk, cereal, snacks, cleaning supplies if needed.

I am my Mother's daughter...full pantry with staples and plenty of food in the freezers. Plus a fridge full of condiments, cheese, etc. My husband does most of the shopping but I go to the grocery store once or twice a month since we shop and cook differently.
I recently went through the pantry and organized and dated all the foods and labeled some "use first". We consume "expired" foods as long as it's not years out (which I found when I dated soups).

I keep certain things, like you said. But since Thing1 has moved out, I have way less than I need to keep on hand. I also live within walking distance of 2 major grocery stores, and also Nick's. I eat a lot of salads, and I like fresh. Also, I like to get things at the spur of the moment if I get a craving. :yay:

I have to admit, ever since COVID, I stock up on everything. At first, it was a panic that I wouldn't be able to find stuff but I got used to having everything on hand and I also realized how much I hated going to the grocery store all of the time.

I make a trip to Safeway or Aldi, maybe twice a month (except during holiday season).

Do two monthly shipments from Misfits.

And of course there is always some dead critter in the freezer since my husband hunts.

You're an empty nester now so all you'll have in your fridge is salad and box wine. :jet:

We used to do regular Misfits shipments, but wife was getting disappointed that their quality was dropping off.
I haven't had issues with quality, yet, but Fed Ex delivery can be sketchy in my area. A couple of times it showed up a day late and I had to throw out the cold stuff. Luckily the Customer Service is really good and getting credits or refunds is very easy.

I REALLY love their meat. Perfect portions and all organic.
