Has anyone ever started a fund or donation program for a person/family??
I need to gather information to help start one for someone who is hospitalized and who has a daughter. The plan it so help out with recovery costs or with his child's expenses. I have no clue where to start other than to go around and ask to put up donation jars around town. Please help!!

We offered an Italian dinner to benefit a cancer victim and her family. We were able to raise $7000.

Okay here's what I would do:

First make sure that this is okay with his family.

Second, contact a local (not big business style) bank in the are and ask for their help in setting up an account for donations for this purpose. Usually they will be more than willing to help and set up a free account and accept donations at their branches.

Next contact area fire departments and organizations such as the optimists club or churches and ask for their help in setting up charitable events for this cause - pancake breakfast, music event etc.

Also contact the local paper, library, websites and the cable company and ask them how you can get this worthy cause mentioned - complete with info on events and where to make donations.

Then if you still have time and volunteers, gather names and numbers of area big businesses and call each and every one and ask them for a donation.

Good Luck.

PS - perfect song

I suggest a poker run (motorcycle/boat) to help raise money. Try soliciting local bars/establishments to see if they would be willing to help. :yay:

Dress Down Fridays! Contact Large local businesses explain the situation in full.

Here's how it works.... Employees can dress down in jeans and tees if they drop $2.00 in the jar. We raised more than $40,000 in one month for computers for indigent families. This cause, should make ya huge bucks in a very short amount of time.

I suggest Government Contractors, Southern Maryland Oil..etc

Good Luck!

I have contacted my bank and was told that a trust or non-profit would require some legal paperwork. This may be a bit more complicated than I want to get in to. The victim's best friend and I want to do this for his parents, and make it as easy as possible. He has a daughter and, WHEN he comes out of this, he will no doubt need some extensive rehabilitation. So Mike and I figured this would be a way to help out his family.
Thanks for the info Mig. When I heard that song, I immediatly thought of you.

Is his daughter hospitalized due to illness or an accident? My son has leukemia and they have alot of organizations that help with medical expenses. I also like the Poker Run idea. Apehanger's Bar in Bel Alton is full of great people who come to the aid of people in need, might want to call them and see about that. Hope it all works out!

You need a 501(c)3 to accept tax deductible donations. You might contact someone you know in a local car or motorcycle club to see if they would "host" the event and pass the funds through. I would think that the injured person's Church would also have a way to help someone raise money for a recovering Church Member. (Or your Church.)

Otherwise, the Bank is probably your best choice. They are correct that there is paperwork to do it correctly. Try the injured person's bank. They may have a way to help a needy "customer." Otherwise, the people you are trying to help will have a tax liability on the money you generate to help them.

What?!
A few years back my newphew lost his lower left arm in an accident and my family held a fundraiser dinner for him over at Solomons rescue squad. We went around to local businesses and asked for donations. We did a 50/50 raffle which raised a good chuck of change. (and the winner gave all the money back to my newphew! :yay:)
